What CB radio to buy

Post by Air »

Hello again to all.
I can get the President Lincoln 2+ and the President MckLnley locally
and they are the same price.
I like the many features of the 2+, but the McKinley seems to be a popular
CB too.

Which would you go for, and what are the main differences / advantages
of one over the other, there is no clarifier on the McKinley which is why
I like the 2+ , unless I picked it up all wrong the clarifier is there to adjust
the transmit or receive frequency in the event the radio's transmitting or
reception is off line with what it should be doing, hopefully someone will
put me straight on this.

Thanks for looking.

Not had either but the McKinley does have a clarifier,. Think they both only work on RX.

I've got both radios and they are both great, however, the McKinley is very fiddly to operate mobile and the Lincoln can't be programmed for UK frequencies easily, so I'd not recommend either for mobile use.
I'd choose a Grant 2 anyday over either of those for mobile use.

The KcKinley is the one which I would choose.

Having said that I don't like the way the front mounted speaker pushes all of the controls in a small area to one side.

If they had used the board in a radio with an underslung speaker and better spread out controls it would be a winner.

I have had a couple of Grant 2's and some of the other radios which share similar boards to the Lincoln 2 and I wasn't impressed with them.

There is no such thing as a Fidelity 1000 which is too good to scrap.

Would look at the Albrecht 5890eu as another option, compact and easier to use as well.
Kill em all and let god sort them out.

True, controls must be fiddly with them pushed together on the McKinley.

The McKinley has true span feature but the frequency display is small.
The rig does take a bit of getting used to though once mastered it is a nice set.

Have you considered any of the CRT rig's..... They are about £100 cheaper.
Or how about the new superstar 3900...

Food for thought

Thanks for posting. I had thought of the CRT 7900,
in Ireland they are not available, I have to import one
and that leaves them just as expensive as the Presidents.

I opted out of this, because I was under the impression the Presidents
were a better built set than the CRT 7900, am I wrong about this, I like
the 7900 better but its so close to the price of the presidents,
being new to this, I need the advise of others,
I can't get a hands on the 7900 without buying one first.

I suppose it comes down to what you want to use the radio for.....

Alot of folks are liking the latest range of CRT rig's.

I personally would buy the McKinley. I enjoy mine in the house and static mobile in the car. The grant2 display and button layout is better but doesn't have span and mine puts out about 8 watts where as McKinley does 25 watts

Thanks for posting. Does your McKinley have a single knob clarifier, or course and fine.
Am reading people have noise / hiss coming from the speaker even when silenced,
and some are having clicks pops and such when moving the squelch manually.

Thank you for posing, I appreciate the link, will check it out.
Question if you have the time, if you had to buy again would you make the same choice of CB,
or has something else come along you would consider, thanks.
