What mobile antanae

Post by Air »

Wondering what people would recommend as a mobile antennae.
I see Wilson 1000, Wilson 5000 advertised local to me.
They seem to cover from 27 to 29 mhz.

The Sirco Performer 5000 which covers 27-28.5 MHz
is available locally, but this is not a mag mount.

Are there other mag mounts I should consider.

Thanks

Antennas working that wide are poor performers.
I would go for tank whip or some centre loading antenna like Predator.

You can't have too many antennas...

I will have a look at the tank whip, looked at the Predator,
looks like it would provide enough leverage for the thugs
around me to bend the roof before they snap it off, at least with
a mag mount it can be taken down and put in car.

Thanks for pointing out how the wide coverage antennae will
not be an optimal performer, good to know this kind of information.

There is no definitive answer to "how far".
If I'm on high ground with good conditions I can do 200 miles on 4 watts.
In built up areas it may need 80 watts to do 10 miles.........
I use a Superstar 9900 for mobile use and a RM203 amp.

Thank you for sharing, conditions and line of sight are a big part of it.

Is there any such thing as repeaters for the 11 Mtr radio.

No, not official ones anyway, it's technically more difficult and not legal.

Regarding the aerials and bandwidth, the frequency range given is usually the tunable range rather than actual bandwidth, it means it will work for that range of frequencies but will have to be adjusted for the band/channels used, 80 channels can be a struggle for some but the longer the better. I use a Valor Halfbreed that I've had for 40+ years myself.
The perfect face for radio.

Sirio 3000/4000/5000, Wilson 2000 Trucker, centre-loaded Modulator II (2), President Texas, etc etc. Would recommend a 7" mag-mount for them though ;)

Sirio 4000 for me, got most the big sirio mobile jobs.5000 not great on swr if that's important to you.rest are far flatter.4000 same length from memory.
I would guess a5' firestik be better as more ridged as whips bend effecting performance .
Not compared both mobile but static mobile sirio 4000 better.
Magmount ensure you buy one that you can replace coax, sirios are ok, can make few mods too , make sure the foil decal fitted to mag base, add extra ground connections in sirio base by sinking grub screws through too screw holes so touch mag metal plate, flatten copper braid to then connect to the one ground screw.
Water proof seals, grease screws and bottom of whip inside holder.
Secure coax better inside sirio base stop it being pulled out, don't ovdrtighten antenna on base, seen them that tight sow fitting turns in base.fubar.

And don't forget your kl 203 amplifier

Was hoping to leave getting an amplifier until further down the road, and I
have all the wrinkles ironed out of setting up a radio for the first time.
I think a CRT SS7900 and especially the 9900 will get me to where I
need to be, without blowing up, or overheating, I know the 9900 could
certainly heat so will be mindful of that, I have a few 12 volt fans laying
about if need be,

Look at simplest to use ,navigate so on.really is little between most of them.mate has 9900 display gone gets stupid hot too much power for heatsink size.
No idea 're 7900 .
Watch some tutorials on menus navigation of radio on YouTube first.

Love the older radios like 3900ss but no freq display which is important to me. Sirio ml 145 is good too if you need shorter whip antenna.top performer but ultimately length longer is better ask collectors mrs apparently.

From the 145, to 3000-4000 theirs a increase of tx rx signal as You go up from 145. 9' tankwhip great static on hilltop as is 7' firestik.
But useless mobile too Shipley or rigid firestik required tri mag maybe.
