Power issues. I’m struggling!

Post by KiloBravo312 »

I’m looking for an independent and compact power supply for my CRT SS 9900 to function. I’m a mobile operator.
For my car I use the Halfords 6 in1 power pack and it works very well and no issues.
However I also want to use my setup in my VW Transporter 2002. Ive attempted to use the Van’s power but it keep blowing the 10amp fuse in the van so unworkable.
I dont know much about electronic or power so I have no idea of lithium alternatives on the market.

So I want to use it while traveling but the Halford’s 6 in 1 power pack is too large for purpose. So dies anyone have any idea’s?
1. I dont want to have to spend a fortune.
2. I do not want to run a mains cable from the battery.

Thanks in advance

Rob.

You have said no to the best option direct to the battery.
Not much more to say.

Lithium ion phosphate. Lifepo4 is a older technology but it will outperform normal batteries and likely have a life span of decades as opposed to often. 3-5 years. Light weight too compact.
A good friend bought a 12 v 12 ah size and it weights like it's hollow and stupidly small for his hilltop dx with his 6900 n and t2lt.
Yes it needs a special charger too but they hardly drop when usrd.
Have a Google ,weigh up the cost ,ability and then consider the life of the battery ,decades !!!..

I plan to buy one but I'm looking 12 v with about 200 ah so not cheap.

Power consumption
0.6A RX, squelched
5.0A TX, max power (AM)
6.0A TX, max power (SSB)
So something wrong if blowing a 10a fuse.

thanks for the reply guys.
I have looked at the TRACER batteries which i spotted on youtube.
Though at £200 not cheap for a 16ah.
So I suppose I’m not wondering what sort of aH would I need for say a 4 hour session on the radio?

If you are connecting into an existing circuit you need to add the current used by whatever is already there - easy to go over 10A if you use the added radio at the same time.

Two options: use a direct feed to the battery (cheap but you said you don't want to do it) or Lifepo4 type battery charged while running (takes up lots of room, and expensive for a decent sized battery with the special charger)...

Stick a 15amp fuse in and if that blows, maybe something's amiss.

Otherwise, can't you split-charge another smaller, compact battery somewhere?

80 watt radios draw about 17 amps. Per what I read, posters radio produces 80 watts- hello.

CRT SS9900 Power : AM 30W, FM 50W, SSB 60W according to Knights.

60w ÷ 12v = 5amps approx.

Saying that, I've got a supposed 80/90 watt EuroCB amp that I'm selling that draws about 12amps so I'm not 100% sure the basic "laws" are always spot on ;)

If you look up the actual export specs it’s 12a at full power

So 17a draw on its own would suggest a fault to me.

Run a direct battery feed, then you can isolate any problems to that instead of chasing ghosts through weird modern car voodoo. I run a separate power feed anyway, even if it's just powering chargers. Much more reliable than using often dodgy cigar lighters that fall out all the time.

I know bugger all about electronics, end of, but would drawing a lot of power through a smaller diameter wire draw more amps that drawing the same power through a thicker diameter wire? Just wondering if some of the heat lost in the thinner wire is adding to the drawn amps or something silly like that?

As mentioned above, I've also taken the positive wire directly from the battery on my car using thicker wire (8amp) and the negative to an earthing point...and I'm only powering a Midland 78 (if I ever use it that is). It's less strain on the car's own wiring and less chance of electrical interference that way, although I still got a little whine on testing it.

If the 9900 is running extra power on export spec' then that'd account for more amps being required.
