Radio chassis screw female rivet / rivnut thingies???

Post by The Collector »

Hey all.

What's the technical name for these things pictured below please?

I have a Cobra 148GTL-DX that I'm going to be putting back together shortly and the chassis is missing a couple. I haven't any spare radios to rob any out of, so are there any companies that sell these?

Failing that, could anyone sell me a few if they've got a spares-bin radios or some new ones at all?

Ta.

I have the same problem Dave on one of my radios . I presume you need some kind of tooling equipment to fit them ? I've no idea what they're called though .

They only push in and the screw opens it up

That's it exactly, a bit like a rawlplug in effect. There's a slight squareness to them that stops them turning when the screw is tightened by the looks of it.

One of them was missing completely and another had snapped and the snapped off bit was inside. I tried some solder on it but it doesn't want to stick to it, so it would probably need a lot of heat. Even then, forcing a screw into it may shear it off again.

They're probably only pennies, but it's knowing what they're called or where to get a pack from. The only spare rig I have is an old GE radio and the screws go directly into the chassis, there are none of these plug things.

Typically, I sold a Uniden chassis on ebay a few weeks ago. That may have had some of these bloomin' things in!

Sorry . But are you sure that's the case ? I don't think tightening the case screws would press these enough . It looks to me as if the rounded raised side has been slightly pressed in the factory to stop it falling through .

Those are different to the ones on mine in the top picture. Perhaps they changed them due to the fact that they are a bit crap? ;)

I'll take a pic' of the other side after I've taken my daughter to Brownies.

Pic's

Not sure how early or late it is board-wise? Says sel no. 00034 on the side of the chassis on a sticker for alignment procedures etc???, but it had a SS360 plate stuck over a used (sadly not untouched) GTL-DX plate.

There are a couple of ways to add things that'll accept an m3 screw, but it'd be a lot easier if someone had a few original ones lying around or knew where to get some from ;)

Thought I'd have another play with rivets, but not that good. They'd be a good thickness. However, drilling out the "stalk" from the inside of the rivets loosens them slightly so then they might spin. I was going to tap a 3mm thread in one but there'd be very little material left, weakening it.

Those are the same Claude ;)

RTI has got a scrap Cobra 140 chassis, but at £50 just to get some of these plugs, I think I'll give it a miss.

Looks like I'll have to buy a £14 rivnut kit if no one's got any going spare.
