All you need on a UK 40 rig is On/Off/Volume and squelch.
The money saved on all the other useless tat can be used decent electronic components.
The Thunderpole T800 demonstrates this very well.

Lo/DX switch on some Midland/Maxcoms.

All it did was turn the RF gain control on/off

There is no such thing as a Fidelity 1000 which is too good to scrap.

Suppose it all came down to money, You can buy our binatone speedway for such and such or our top of the range 5 star with lots of buttons for a lot more cash and the average buyer thought oh that's a much better radio with all its shiny buttons. But they both use the same chassis, So besides a few useless controls they're the same radio. Same applies to other brands,

The purpose of that was you could have a speaker in your kitchen for example and the radio in the living room, So you could listen to the radio whilst you made your dinner, Really useful feature

When the radio was fitted under the dashboard in the car, the speaker was firing down at your feet which was useless due to road noise etc, so you had the opportunity to switch over to a small extension speaker that was usually fitted higher up on the dash and aimed properly towards your ears.

Yeah but in that case the ext speaker would be left permanently plugged in
