The purpose of that was you could have a speaker in your kitchen for example and the radio in the living room, So you could listen to the radio whilst you made your dinner, Really useful feature
When the radio was fitted under the dashboard in the car, the speaker was firing down at your feet which was useless due to road noise etc, so you had the opportunity to switch over to a small extension speaker that was usually fitted higher up on the dash and aimed properly towards your ears.
Yeah but in that case the ext speaker would be left permanently plugged in
Just realised I'd written that lol. That went wrong!
Should have said it was okay to switch over to your mono headphones when you had your radio in your bedroom late at night, so you didn't have to faff about getting out of bed to plug them in!

I Doubt the designers had that in mind dave as it was a mobile rig
Dozens of manufacturers produced power supplies by the thousands, so they knew people would use mobiles at home too, rather than having to buy a separate and more expensive homebase unit. Apart from my initial Fidelity homebase, I didn't use a homebase radio again for decades.
Although I used a power mic' and headphones and lay under the quilt, my parents would still bang on the wall and shout they could still hear me
