Following on from another thread that is going a bit OT.
What are your thoughts on Roger Beeps?
It's just for fun so 2 selections are permitted as some answers may cross-over slightly.

Re: Roger Beep YES/NO Poll
Nope must admitt not required and a pain to listen for anymore than one or two overs. the guys on the amateur bands manage every contact without using one and in all my years have never had that many contacts where I could not manage to work out if the other guy had finished his over !!
saying that its nice to hear the hygain 5 beep now and again and even a nice k-tone one but again anymore than once or twice then its too much for my ears !

I would rather listen to my 70 year old neighbour having a tug in the bathroom next door.

why? does he have a five tone swinging from his bell-end ? useful on ssb. but as much use as a condom machine in the popes bedroom on fm,

Re: Roger Beep YES/NO Poll
Roger beeps are very useful if the radio does a CTCSS reverse burst. This normally silences the receiving squelch tail, so you have NO IDEA if the person has de-keyed or not. A beep will tell you.

I don't seem to have that function on my Murphy homebase, must have been an optional extra that I was too tight to pay for.NiCdeth wrote:Roger beeps are very useful if the radio does a CTCSS reverse burst. I don't see why they ever need to be louder than normal speech, or play a ruddy tune. A subtle single bip is tolerable.

If they're good enough for NASA...
...unless they decide to modify their gear to 5+-tone over-deviating crap and only use it to shout at people in the next block

Re: Roger Beep YES/NO Poll
I think they can be useful for weak contacts, especially on SSB but other than that they are just annoying.

Re: Roger Beep YES/NO Poll
I like a short single beep like the Ham International or the President George but when these Aholes extend the beep on their anyclones deliberatly pi$$e$ me right off, I dont like 5 or 9 tones either but a K tone can be tolerable, The Hygain peewit and the MK1 148/360 are just horrible and 3900 beeps when a screwdriver expert has adjusted the FM deviation right up also distorts the beep and that can be annoying.
