Re: whatever came of ???
When they went on sale the advertising advised that they may not work very well in London, Band I TV was still active back then from Crystal Palace, 200kW ERP on 45.00 with a 3MHz bandwidth. IIRC the adverts called it a Sunburner. Hard to believe now that BW 405 line VHF tv was still on air until Jan 85!
my friend grafter, seems like you are using a very offensive tone in the reply.

Re: whatever came of ???
yes collector the Kaiser is the hand held device..
it's surprising what you find in these old magazines..
after all not everyone has seen everything, even peter king is at £335 for that old EMS
looking back in time in the trade magazines there's a lot of stuff that either never got sold, or did badly when sold,
so it's always nice to see the rarer stuff from in the day.

Re: whatever came of ???
I haven't seen one in the flesh, but recently someone stuck up a picture of the innards of a Maxcom 4E type rig with what looks like a VHF transverter on the "Official Charlie Tango DX Facebook Page". One commenter reckoned it was a SSB board, but I doubt that as there was no SSB filter.

Re: whatever came of ???
my two are the CTVR 40 mk2 i have never seen a mk1 the one pictures, but have seen the mk2..
it looks like a Maxcom 4E main board with what looks like a transverter board, but it doesn't have any PA on it, just seems to connect direct to the SO-239 socket so unsure how it works..
but the PA doesn't work, and the TX LED doesn't come on..
i have the right wire mic, the noise is like AM with no aerial in, and i can still receive the original frequency before the board kicks in, so the 27mhz is definitely the IF.
the address in grantham is now a nursing home..!!

Re: whatever came of ???
Got a couple of them in the shed some where,
will have to dig them out and see if they still work
The pic is of the brochure and it quotes £149 in about 1980.

Well I have a boxed MK1 version in my loft......I'll drag it out soon and show some photos and maybe a video (saying that I've been threatening a Cobra Cam 88 video for over a year now! )

Re: whatever came of ???
they are like a transverter, look at the coils and cans in the pa strip pimp, its been a long time but i think they used the rigs pa rejigged for 46mhz,
i can remember they were a pain to align without any service manual.

Re: whatever came of ???
there is a couple of dodgy looking wires from the main board via some caps to the transverter board.
i just like to get them working, maybe off to nick's yet

I always wonder if anyone really used them, and if the OFCOM of the day noticed?

I think I've got that mag in the loft somewhere
I've got one of those 6 channel shiney Merits, but had to get the crystals for it. Someone on here helped me out with those.

Re: whatever came of ???
Well Thankyou guys, the radio mentioned was the Product of my Dad Rod Buck and yes the Mk1’s were 4E’s (his favourite) with transverter boards fitted he also made FM boards for the same radio,
The Mk2 was actually commissioned in the Maxon factory in Taiwan, and I believe only 500 were ever made, this was also the same factory a number of Midland branded radios were made,
The Mk1’s were all converted in our home and shop in Castlegate in Grantham Lincs and I did earn quite a bit of pocket money assembling the boards!! Excuse the work I would have only been about 11 at the time!!
The Phonepatch (MK1,2,and three) were all built in house at the unit in Dysart Road and I cannot imagine any still exist!!
Would love to get my hands on any of his old gear now he’s gone, but happy to answer any questions and what ultimately happened to the system!!
Rod was always outspoken and spent his latter years trying to get approval for the use of the band just below 2M in sport aviation, and inventing ‘Wendywindblows’ an automated weather reporting system for use in his beloved Hang Gliding.
