SATCOM Pirates use the old military satellites "no longer used by the military" abandoned years ago now space junk, some people are using them to communicate to each other mostly Brazilians. I have picked them up before here in the UK on a handheld.
In my own opinion I think its better to put something to use than it left abandoned. It would be nice to have SATCOM included in the amateur bands.

I don't see much chatter about it...
I knew about this years ago.
It would be nice to have a thread about SATCOM...
It would equally be nice to have a 1.25 meter band here in the UK one channel for SATCOM and simplex channel for calling and two simplex frequencies and that is all you'd really need besides there's plenty of spectrum that isn't being used and a satellite where all kinds of fun things could be setup.

Re: SATCOM Pirates
I'm interested in listening to the SATCOM pirates. I've built a 8-element yagi and it's pretty good for what I can receive. I'll share some pics and share a link on my websdr where I listen to it remotely.

Re: SATCOM Pirates
couple of points:
1) 220 in the UK - won't happen - too close to DAB frequencies and unworkable sadly.
2) "no longer used by the military" is VERY, VERY incorrect - "seldom used by military for analogue voice" is fair
I have only heard about 3 "legitimate user" contacts "in the clear" since the last shuttle launch when you used to hear the KINGS and HERKY
testing their recovery net.
3) This topic really belongs in the scanning section ? not VHF/UHF licence free.

Re: SATCOM Pirates
For any "doubting Thomases" out there, visual proof that
the Milsats are still VERY MUCH used - just not used for clear voice
And thats just one transponder on one bird !
