2 new UHF freqs for kingsway centre - newport

licence 1057353 on the WTR refers - first is DMR second seems not yet on air

currently unsure as to whether this is in addition to the G4S DMR system , or whether G4S lost the contract

hmm...plus ca change!

Seems that the G4S licenced callsigns "CHEETAH" have moved to the second of the new kingsway frequencies.
I suspect the old 447MHz frequency will therefore be dead now ?

they now share the higher frequency split by two DMR talkgroups / timeslots.

Facilities / management appear to be on one, cleaners appear to be on the other.

On the first frequency only one talkgroup seems in use, which appears to be security and is common to
both friars walk and the legacy kingsway arcade. This is in paralle with the main town storenet.

This brings Friars Walk's simplex licence into question, as to whether it too has been superseded - or whether it was a stop-gap?

There have been massive changes in Newport UHF allocations over the last 12 months - mainly it seems caused by the expansion of
TATA steel operations at Llanwern who have over doubled their number of active channels

bigbloke whats the chances of being able to receive these in cardiff on a handie? or SDR with whitestick? are they running a CAP+?

Hi,

No CAP+ nor RAS

But I suspect their "customer service" radios which I know are hyteras running on a simplex channel dont appear to decode suggesting they are
using the new standards "two slot simplex" which DSD / DSD+ (afaik) dont support yet.

As for whether you'd get these in Cardiff depends upon where in cardiff you are.

The red "ridge lines" lines I've overlaid roughly show how Newport city centre is isolated to the west and north by two hill ridges (brynglas
ridge omitted for clarity)

The horseshoe shaped ridge that runs from St Wollos , across Stelvio park to the Gaer, up to Glaslwch, the Ridgeway, across to
Alt-yr-yn and Barrack Hill where it is broken by the Usk valley,

On the east side of the river there is a second ridge that goes from Summerhill, across Beechwood and Christchurch and continues
up to the celtic manor.

In part these hills are why Newport city centre has retained much of its historic / victorian architecture as it was very tricky to bomb
the docks and still pull up in time during WWII

The TX sites in question are roughly in the centre of the horseshoe.

As such , if your somewhere like a coastal high spot near St mellons, theres a fair chance
If you're inland a bit, say , Roath or Llanishen, then your probably quite shielded unless you live up on the ridge between Llanedryn and Roath.

I'm fortunate as from my back garden, the next landfall to the west is the wenvoe ridge ! so I have the best of both worlds :-)

Ahh bigbloke! im in both roath and llanishen so pretty sheilded!! unless i program them into my handie and drive around! hahaha im hoping when my white stick gets here i can pick up various from the loft! heres hoping!!!

good feeder is as,if not more important than a given white stick.

dont use rg-58 - get some good stuff :-)

I know the thread is pretty old now but for what it's worth..

It seems Kingsway are now using a "PTT over cell" system.

I wonder how quick the uptake will be of these systems? I imagine a few places will migrate sooner or later.

theyre using PoC for their management channel

Both of the Kingsway UHF DMR frequencies have fallen silent - presumed dead or moved to PoC permanently

Friars security have a new allocation (Storenet systems) which is in the WTR

2 years on, and the new storenet systems allocation is now silent too. I suspect that they are now under the Mitie Security licence
Which is encrypted DMR .
