Hygain 8795DX sudden fault.

Post by Equalizer »

Hi,

Got a Hygain 5 8795 (x50s) that has been working an absolute treat no issues, then I turned it on the other day and its just making a quiet hissing sound with no tx or rx. Squelch affects the hiss (cuts in as it should) so receive is working to some extent.
Audio IC working gives loud buzz when touched, doesn't SEEM to be any dry joints.
I noticed at one point I powered it up and it seemed to work for about 10 seconds and then went off again and back to just the faint hiss.
TX does no power output but makes a slight farting noise from the speaker!
Like I said, never a problem until the other day it's been superb.
Any ideas?

Measure VCO voltage. Most probably is out of lock.

VCO block has died, very common fault (if not "golden screwdrivered", about the only fault we ever see) in those radios.

Spectrum communications in the UK sells an aftermarket replacement part... or cut the old one open and rebuild if you know what you are doing.

As ch25 mentioned, VCO voltage will need realignment when the part is refitted to the radio.
