Yaesu FT-990 Dim Display.

Post by Tim »

Friend of mine has a very dim frequency readout on the display and he can’t get it bright enough even turning it up fully. I have read that there is a filter behind the Perspex screen that degrades and darkens overtime which can be removed, however, looking at the exploded diagram of the front panel there is no filter shown or mentioned, if there is a display filter then it would be easy to remove by removing the panel strip below the Perspex screen, removing the 2 screws and lifting the Perspex out. Now, the question is, is there a filter behind the screen and if not how would you get the frequency display brighter? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

First of it all you should check voltage on display. VCC and bias. Most probably some capacitors dried out in voltage converter circuit.
Another thing is display ageing.

Thanks for the info but it seems like with these radios it is a common problem which would need a change of components to the unit to allow more power into it to increase the brightness. The owner of this radio isn't going to pursue the matter, he's selling the radio.
