Re: President GRANT Classic SSB power
A bit of an old thread this, but it popped up while I was doing a google search on this very issue.
My Grant 1 arrived from France today (PC999AD PCB). It was 40 channels CEPT and 4W max FM/AM and 7W SSB max.
I sorted the channel expansion and removed the resistor from the rear of the RF power VR which gave me up to 16W FM/AM. I've set it to 10W FM/AM.
The problem is the same as Sammy posted. Not very much power on SSB. The resistors are all correct after checking the posted images.
In the time since the last post has anyone solved the riddle?
Also both the fine and course tune seem to be locked, They have no effect whatsoever. There are two wires (orange and white) which are soldered together. One is from the fine tune and the other from the course tune. I snipped them but it made no difference.
Confused!
Any ideas?

Check for a little ceramic capacitor on the solder side near the output wire that goes to the so259. Remove it and you'll be back in business. There's another one of my threads on the forum with a photo somewhere.

Re: President GRANT Classic SSB power
Thanks for the replies chaps. Spotted and removed the ceramic capacitor and all is well on the TX power front.
Now, the fine/course tune. After doing a receive check they are indeed both working fine on RX, but are completely disabled on TX. The two wires I mentioned need to be joined in order to get the RX tune.
There is a loom fitted to the radio which when in position one the radio is mid band only. Position two gives 120 channels. So all is good there. Methinks a little more investigating is afoot!
It's a good condition radio externally (I'll get some pics up on the what have you bought today thread), inside is immaculate. All original components still in place. I've never seen this loom/jumper conversion done before and I think I'll remove it as it looks a bit unsightly.
All thoughts on the fine/course tune will be appreciated...

Re: President GRANT Classic SSB power
UPDATE!
I have located where the orange and white wires should be connected on the PCB. Orange is W15 and white is located at R158.
Now I have to dig out my wire box because whoever did this has cut the wires short!
Hopefully this will be the end of the adventure...

Does the Grant have the PC-999 board inside it?
