12v 7ah / yaesu 817nd

Post by stanwendy »

Hi lads , Lots of different answers online and as with radio RX and TX it will only be a Rough guess, I have a yuasa 12v 7ah battery and linked it up to my yaesu 817nd and it was on for quite a few hours , Mixture of rx and tx , Anyway in the near future I'll be doing some portable use , How long roughly will the above battery last , Do I need to sort maybe a different type of battery , Jusf a rough guess would be fine, Thanks,

I went portable with exactly the same setup a few weeks ago and managed 24 hours run time this was using mostly the 2.5 watt setting. But i ran the battery well below 12 volts which you shouldn't really do as it can damage the battery. A freshly charged battery should read 12.6 volts and you should stop using it when it reaches 12 volts as thats roughly half of its capacity used up

Funny enough it was on 12.7v and finished off around 11.7v, It was however on the 5 watts but I will bear that in mind next time, I may take a multimeter with me so I can check how it's going, Next now is another homebase antenna to take portable , Thanks for the above.

The 817 has a built in voltage meter. When charging your 7ah battery do so at no more than round about one amp, A normal 4 amp (Or above) car battery charger will quickly kill your battery

If it's HW, why the tuner?

Your right if it's the correct length then a tuner isn't needed, But it's good to have it when portable just to iron out any SWR problems caused by near by objects etc

Thanks all for the advice, I always charge the yuasa battery with a motorcycle smart charger, I also have a battery charger that came with the battery , Its a trickle charger , I'll check on if but it only throws a little at it when charging,

I recently ran my FT991 on a 7ah lifepo4 battery. It did really well, needed to swap over batteries after about two hours. SSB at 50w.

Hi lads after having a chat on the phone to the battery shop and after asking for advice his reply was to stick to the yuasa battery as the 7ah is about £15 new , He also does 12ah and 17ah which are around £20 , Cut it short i would need a charger and something like a 100, 200 or even 500ah battery would not only be a lot more expensive but a bit of an overkill for my use , For the size of a 7ah I could take two or buy another 12 or 17ah for peanuts, I'll give these a go anyway , They will never go to waste if my plan changes,
