Cybernet Vs Uniden We might eventually have a winner.

Post by Buick Mackane »

Been watching a lot of UK CB Radio servicing videos lately on youtube, The man knows his stuff and seems to hate unidens with a passion, According to him unidens are less sensitive than cybernets hence unidens seem to suffer less bleedover. And you can't adjust the reference xtal in unidens because theres no trimmer on the reference xtal. And due to ageing xtal frequencies drop. He was going to test them for adjacent channel rejection on the proper test gear to confirm it but i haven't seen that video yet so don't know the results.

Few other well known uniden issues are

Bassy audio
Lazy RX Meters,
And a thump on TX.

May the debate commence :D

My Uniace 200 gets brilliant audio reports.
Yes they have that 'hiccup' sound on air when you TX which always amazes people when I tell then theyre on a Uniden :-)
One of those once you hear it you can't unhear it things!
Needle on mine is fine and compares on RX S points with other sets.
Does a full 4 watts.

The electrolytic capacitors seem to be failing on a lot of them.........

No comment from me . Some people like Unidens , and some Cybernets . That's the way it is , and that's the way it's always been . I don't need some **** on Youtube to tell me which radio is best . Each to their own .

BTW Uniden rules !!!

I Knew there would be a comment from you sammy  Aye each to their own. Its really personal preference.

As regards to the electrolytic capacitors failing there seems to be two in particular that cause grief, 220uf & 470uf i think,

I've always said that I personally thought Cybernets and the likes of the Amstrads etc are much better for RX than Unidens, and I've had and used nearly every UKFM radio going over the years.

The only time that I've ever used a Uniden for a while was because of a lad 100yds from me pushing 100watts through a silver rod which wiped nearly all of the channels on my Cybernet radios, but only 20-odd on my Uniden 200. If I kept to ch1 or ch40 and the people I were talking too were S5 or above, I could chat normally. I did lose a few people that I could hear reasonably clearly in the distance on my Amstrad, but could hear bugger-all from them on the Uniden.

The argument will continue until the end of time... ;)

One of the best hence they fetch decent money these days and bleedover isn't an issue now so no problems there

BTW folks we all know people prefer one or the other, But the thread is about what performs best from a technical view point.

To echo what Sammy said I don’t think it really matters what a ‘tech’ might say about any particular radio… It’s personal … If I like something in particular I don’t need someone to tell me either way … I’ve been through shedloads of radios and always end up with Unidens left after a clear out …😉… Although I do now have a Westland …that Is still in its box yet to be opened..😂… Maybe this will be the first Cybernet keeper.. 🤔

Most Unidens are great.

Some cybernets are great, but an equal number are not.

The other day someone on Arsebook really wanted to swap a PC-999 grant so that he could get another Hy-gain 5 2795 {bnghd}

On balance I am on the Uniden side of the fence, but I do like tristar 777 and Nato type Cybernets if they are setup properly.

I wouldn't hold onto a PTBM121 boarded radio though, I find them dreadful

There is no such thing as a Fidelity 1000 which is too good to scrap.
