It was the 7-segment display itself that was faulty. Some segments were completely blown so probably they were shorted to ground at some stage. That's fixed now, so I just have to sort the selcall socket if I'm going to use it. I have the bits for that, so no drama.

Can the displays still be purchased or do they need to come from scrappers?

I don't know whether they can be purchased; I just happened to have one

Looks like RS stock a few different types.
Just need to figure out which ones are the correct spec for a couple of other radios I have with missing segments.
