Turner Exp 500 restoration?

Post by gmham »

Any advice for cleaning up the old Turner expander 500 casings ? Also PTT bar seems fairly stiff and seems to slide the lock switch down after a few presses of it. Anything worth spraying on the sliders to free them up a little ?

I used to use a lot of Servisol Super 10 for cleaning switches and the likes.

Okay thanks mate will pick up a tin, did think about using wd40 on the sliders but from doing a bit research is seemingly a big no as it can cause problems clogging things up.

A cheap can of contact cleaner is only about £2 more than a can of WD40.

WD is okay for helping to free up seized joints and for water dispersal, but might not work too well on certain electrical bits and could cause dust to stick to it etc. Squirting contact cleaner on the sliders should help (can help with bringing back audio as mentioned on another topic a little while back) but just don't go overboard and flush out too much slider lubricant.

If it's a plastic-on-plastic PTT issue that's seizing up, then a silicone lubricant spray would be beneficial and last longer than WD40, but the latter may work for a while. If you can get to the problem part, a thin smear of "white grease" (if you have any) would probably do the job ;)

Brilliant thanks for the advice. Will open the mic up and take a look, hopefully a clean up itself might free them up a little but will pick up a can of servisol for cleaning the body of the mic and contact cleaner for the sliders.
Will have a look back on the forum , when you say about the possibility of bringing back any audio issues with the contact cleaner was this in relation to this particular mic ?

Update- okay wired up the mic plug and plugged the mic into the 148 but that’s as far as I got as massive feedback from the internal speaker of the cobra ? :?

Whipped the base of the mic of and well you can imagine !!...dust, dust and even more dust and whatever ! Gave it a quick dust down no lubricants etc used yet. Plugged the radio back in and this time feedback screeching but no actual audio !

Will take your advice and strip it down and use the switch cleaner etc and hopefully your tip on the cleaner it sometimes curing audio problems will work !! Failing that am stumped !!

Thanks so much for sharing all the photographs. Have uploaded another photograph of the earth wire that has come loose, does this possibly attach to the mic cable where it exits the mic ( circled in pink ) ?

Okay thanks Claude it’s working fine now anyway !! It’s an earth wire and attached to a metal ring so it’s obviously doing it’s job as again no audio before and audio now !

Thanks again for your kind help with the images, again appreciate that.

Glad you got it sorted. I'd have taken my broken Expander apart to suss it out otherwise.

One word of advice, be careful with the battery covers on these. I recalled from what's left of my memory that they could be fragile after all these years, but was amazed that mine came with an intact one. That was, until I took the 9v battery back out after testing the mic' and snapped the bendy clip. Duh...

Okay thanks mate again appreciate the advice, my own mic came with the battery cover so that’s in itself is rare ! All switch covers as well and at a bargain of a price !
There is a superb multi part video on YouTube of a chap rebuilding ( seemingly didn’t survive the post ! ) could well be worth watching. Let me know how you get on with yours in due course .

Will do mate.

I bought some uV light - activated glue to fix the broken stem's top "loop", but as it's the cheap, Chinese copy of the real stuff, it's pants! I tried 2 different uV wavelength torches but it made no difference to it drying. Might have to resorts to good old epoxy resin.
