Squelch

Post by Cousinjack »

Ok, so, I may have had a bit too much time on my own today, but I got to thinking .......

Is it squelch, as in squelCH, or squelSH ?

I’ve always pronounced it with the CH.

But ‘Bunsen Honeydew’ off of YouTube always pronounces it with the SH. And he seems a man that would know !

Also, where does the word come from ? Anyone know ? Is it an acronym ?

I know it’s not important, but I’d like to find out !
Cheers all !

The word meaning is 'to suppress'. It's correct spelling is with CH.

Yeah I’ve always said CH as in cheers.. ( check spelling 🙈)

But heard a few people pronounce it as SHH
I used to take the mic out of them but then I’ve heard it a few times on YouTube and wondered if I was the one pronouncing it wrong !!

I had a German walkie talkie once where the squelch was labelled 'Rauche Sperre' which translates to smoke barrier or smoke lock
