Monitoring on 934.

Post by QRZ-934 »

Does anyone else monitor any channels on this band?

In my area (w mids) channel 40 is currently the quietest so I tend to squelch out the small amount of background noise and keep an ear open.
Will deffo be taking the loop yago out before too long and having a listen higher up for any voice traffic.
Maybe theres still some small pockets of activity.

If I had an aerial I might be tempted to have a listen out. I could do with one of those red-based car aerials that I always used to see on ebay.

I don't get much time to myself so I certainly wouldn't be able to listen out for long anyway to be honest though.

Channel 20 was the caling channel so if there is anyone about you would be better off on there.
You must have the Delta 1 to have 40 channels on it, they are the only 934 radio that could be converted to 40 channels.

Hi Zephyr, yes Ive got both types of delta 1, one with 40 and the other with 20 channels.
Also I have two of the stabo 944/934 radios that can also monitor channels 20 ( its 39 on those tho).
Once I get the loop yagi properly set up I can swing it around and see if theres anything further away, really need to go climb a mountain for that though!

If spoken last year ? Several times with an english friend who lives at the N.E. coast. I more than happy to put up the yagi again. Ch 20 (ch 40 on stabo) is the only clear frequency for us in the Netherlands. On facebook there is an active 934mhz group... good for skeds :-)

I deffo need to sort out a length of heliax for the yagi and go take it up a hill to get away from all the noise on the band.

Clearest channel is 20, but has a noise floor of 3 bars occasionally hitting 5, Ive been listening all week and heard no voice traffic at all, my locations not the best so getting that yagi out is deffo key along with the preamp to hear any long range stuff.

When I took the delta out a few weeks ago in the car it was quite maked how the noise disappeared moving from place top place, I reckon if I get the yagi out on a hill away from the urban sprawl itll go a lot quieter. :)

As a matter of interest, is there at existing ex-pmr/military etc radios capable of 934MHz that can be easily modified or reprogrammed??

Good morning !

Programmable radio's.....not that im aware off.
Possible a few japanese ?
As they still have a 903 MHz CB band, I can imagine maybe a few of those tranceivers would be able to setup for 934 MHz. Possible there are others though.

An intresting product is made by SG labs
They had/have an 933/934 Mhz transverter....im sure it is still availible.
If memory services me well, those who use it are really happy with it !

In Switserland and Croatia / Servia region there are from time to time 934Mhz gear up for sale (clarions etc). Somtimes there are a few Stabo's up for sale in Germany or in the Netherlands but that is rare as Henns teeth (hope i use that correct hihi)>

Amplifiers are not that difficult they can be found in the "ex-phone" section.
Here in the Netherlands a lot of those formal phone amplifiers are used for a pirate band which is just below 900 Mhz 860 ? .....though i dont think it is so much in used these days.
obvious with those amplifiers you will need a sequenzer etc.
And bare in mind...."QRO" near 1 GHz isnt something to play with. (sounding like a *** now hihi)>

Owh...and there is a company who constructs new verticals.....Simon the wizard posted it on his website a while ago....im sure they are still availible on ebay or so...

In aspect to DX....and hearing stations:

Without "tropo" conditions you wont hear a lot....
So we "checked" the tropo forcast maps http://www.dxinfocentre.com/tropo_eur.html

IF UK and The Netherlands are in the "colours" we have a "shot" otherwise it is difficult.
It is also wise to monitor 23cm beacons....beeing active without "openings" can easilly set your mind to "not interested again" and thats a loss for 934 !

There are radios that are programmable, a member on this board called Ramjet555 did some experimentation with some motorola TK980 radios and reprogrammed the 934 mhz channels in.

Interesting to hear about a possible transverter Henry.

Radios from Japan are in the ballpark for required frequencies also so id think theyd not be too hard to modify.
Commtels 934 npr radio has a japanese sibling called the magnum 8300-tru1 which is identical in every resepct apart from the frequency difference so theres a prime example.

Dont know if theres anything pmr/ex military that could be repurposed tho.

Will keep an eye on that tropo map, have seen it before, very useful facility! :)

Unfortunately I have any gear for 934, but I do have receivers, so I'll listen out for any activity especially during tropo.

Correct.

Bear in mind that there are actually two frequency tables for the band, 1981 and 1983.
C20 for 83 is as you say 934.9625. For 81 it was 934.975.
Modification for the delta 1's gives the interleaved channels so you get 40 channels to play on. :)
Might modify the 20 channel one shortly but need to be a tad careful because the board that needs altering has a cmos static sensitive chip in the firing line. Dont want to zap that . :)

Thats why I asked if that the correct frequency. Ive programmed .9625 into the receive of a FT8800, but only have 2m/70cm antenna plugged in. Not expecting miracles. Could make up a specific antenna for that freq and change over if I hear a tropo on 432/446 MHz.

I'm sure sonebody like Grandstand did a 27mhz to 934mhz transvertor back in the 80's. If anyone's got ant early/mid 80's mag's handy, it might be worth a quick look.

If not, I'm just going mad.
