Advice please

I live in Portsmouth and would like to listen to ships radio transmissions.

Can someone recommend a scanner that I could use sat in the car, I wont be using it other than sat in the car so size and weight is not important.
Besides shipping there will also be military aircraft and the emergency services, ( lifeboat, coastguard helicopters)

My advice would be a Uniden 3500 XLT. Depends on how much you want to spend? New or secondhand?

Depends on how much you want to spend? Probably the best scanner available in the UK is the Uniden 3500XLT which can pick up most of the frequencies used.

Its also highly portable and like any Uniden scanner, there's tons of aftermarket accessories you can get with it like car chargers and antennas.

I advised the gent to go to Nevada radio in portsmouth and speak to John the scanner expert he can't go wrong had one of those 3500xlt sold it after a couple of months the OU didn't do a course in operating it

That last post was good reminded me of http://www.aprs.fi shows Boats People Planes Cars all using GPS. Lots of boats. Get Details on Cargo! including hazardous waste! great website. hope this helps, my tiny Yaesu VX3e has all the Marine Band pre programmed in and has stereo headphone socket so i can connnect to a small FM Modulater (500mw FM transmitter uses 2x AAA batteries £10 Amazon.co.uk) and send it to my car stereo by tuning to its 88.00mhz signal very easy. or just use an earpiece.

The Yaesu VX3 does have pre programed marine channels But channel 0 is missed, unlike the vx2. Channel 0 is 156.00 worth keeping an ear on.
