If the encryption types differ then it can be a silent transmission. However i don't think they use encryption.

Hi...Do you have a get bunch set? A few radios, including the MD-380 don't require a get gathering to be set and they will work fine. Then again, a few radios won't get any sound in the event that you don't have a get bunch customized. I don't claim a MD-2017, yet it's something to attempt.
