Intek tornado 34s cb radio follow on from lcl2740

Post by mastercare »

Hi guys your response to my project has been phenomenal ....the lcl 2740 has now been fully aligned and its the best i can get it....
ive now realized looking through my old gear...ive found a Intek tornado 34s am fm ssb radio....this uses the same pll mc145106
so i thought why waste anymore time on the lcl2740 when this rig has more features....this all started in 2017 when i posted about my late fathers rig he bought back from the USA a montgomery ward 719....this rig turned out to be too complicated to convert to 10 metres....hence i moved on to this intek tornado...ive had a hell alot of help from Ibcomms sue down under....so this project is to be restarted...ive got find a 15.360 mhz crystal...
thats where we left it...

the only problem i can see is why it only goes to ch 34 or this may be normal....its shown on the net as being 40chs...im well confused...
the other thing before any work can be done...is to sort out the strange freq readouts...
so more to follow on this....

cheers all
paul

Hi all..got the intek tornado on bench....just confirmed strange chs
ch 34 = 26.955
ch 20 = 27.205
ch 1 = 26.965

also above rotary ch switch is a connector i notice a green wire has been cut ?
or is this normal...please see enclosed photo
ok gonna start to check underside of board...will report as I go on...
thanks

Channel 20 is correct (27.205) so measure frequency while going up one channel at a time until to find where it breaks. Once you find which one, post the PLL program pin voltages here on the last "good" channel and for the one above it that's incorrect. The PLL could be bad, but that's normally only seen where people have been playing in that section for channel mods, they rarely fail on their own. More likely a wiring or broken connection issue, measurements will reveal all...

thanks

Hi Ibcomms and other interested parties....as requested full truth listings as requsted.

We decided to perform a full test of all the channels, on this device a total of 34.

From channels 26 and up, we have measured a shift of 390KHZ lower then expected, the following is the table we produced from the PLL's P register.
Last good was ch.23

1 is approx 8.72V, 0 is 0.14v(We are reading from pin 17 to to pin 9 on this binary table)
* CH23 000 111 100

? CH24 111 011 100 (+10KHZ 27.245mhz?)
? CH25 100 111 100 (+20KHZ 27.265mhz?)
---------------------------------------
? CH26 010 010 100 (-390KHZ 26.875mhz?)
? CH27 110 010 100 (-390KHZ 26.885mhz?)
? CH28 001 010 100 (-390KHZ 26.895mhz?)
? CH29 101 010 100 (-390KHZ 26.905mhz?)
? CH30 011 010 100 (-390KHZ 26.915mhz?)
? CH31 111 010 100 (-390KHZ 26.925mhz?)
? CH32 000 110 100 (-390KHZ 26.935mhz?)
? CH33 100 110 100 (-390KHZ 26.945mhz?)
? CH34 010 110 100 (-390KHZ 26.955mhz?)

From that it looks like it's got an incorrect switch fitted - maybe someone replaced a faulty switch in years gone past with one from another set, assuming that all switches that look the same are the same? A bit of history on the set might help - has the radio ever worked correctly when you owned it, and is there any evidence of change such as altered wiring or fresh soldering in that area?

If it is the wrong switch, you have two options - either obtain a correct one from a junker, or fit an EPROM (or in 2021, a microcontroller!) programmed to match the switch you have to the PLL in the radio.

Does this only go up to channel 34?
According to Claude's info the channel range is 26.875-27.265 which is messed up anyway, well compared to everyone else.
What is the frequency on channel one? Over.

hi alucard agn yes ch1 is 26.965 MHz and yes it only goes to ch 34...
but seems I've run out of options just been looking on internet....those ch selectors are very rare....

thanks
