It all looks a bit shiny and new. And would John, a man who took pride in his work, really scrawl that graffiti all over the inside of the case? The stickers look too new and there's no date handwritten on the 4mhz label. And why a MK3 prototype in 1988 when he was well on the way to the MK5? No ALC carrier mod. No handwritten and signed serial number sticker inside the bottom case. No red nail varnish...

I'm hoping my suspicions are wrong and it is the genuine article. But, as BP said, radiopete is the man to ask.
Never, ever, ever....bloody anything ever!

Far too many radio's to list here. But I do own a legal one...

I was being a little naughty with my comments haha.

Fake or not, if its being kept for nostalgia then its priceless just as it is, if thats with the blessing of john’s fair hands or persons unknown 👍🤪

I didn't realise that some people went to such great lengths to copy them .

Increase the value of the radio by 100% or more..... why not. Do a good enough job and someone is bound to believe it or take a chance on it.

Maybe . However , someone might do this just to show that they can . And to show that they can get away with it , rather than for the money . I mean a clean 148 could sell for £200 . No ? How much would one of these suspected MK3s thingies go for . £350 ? Just seems like a lot of work , for not a great deal of capital gain to me . But there you go .

Well its an oddity for sure. If it were a case of doing it to see if you could then that's a project, but at least claim the work as your own and not pass it off as John's. I guess we'll never really understand the motivations at work here. In fact, this is all speculation and this could in fact be one of John's radios, or even an unknown apprentice he had....

Anyway, nice radio, hope it works well and brings many more years of pleasure for the op :-D

I think its the history of it all thats quite fascinating. But I will say, on the good few I have had through here JN's 'signatures and serial numbers are very difficult to read.
