2 batteries, charging current is split into both batteries as per Edd's entry above.
I just used to take a fully-charged, heavy-duty spare car battery out with me when going up on the Lickey Hills for the day. I strapped it in behind the front seats and ran the CB from that.
I never used an amp though so bear in mind that it'll run a battery down a hell of a lot quicker with one on.

Re: FITTING EXTRA BATTERY TO CAR ??
Surely just fitting a new decent battery in the car should cope with it ??
Cb will draw maybe 2 amps on receive, 4 or 5 on transmit, plus the burner will draw a few... any decent battery ought to last a good few hours and still be capable of starting the car surely ??
Save the trouble and expense of split charging systems and more battery’s.
Either that or just park on top of a hill !

Re: FITTING EXTRA BATTERY TO CAR ??
Leaving your sidelights on overnight would often kill an old battery years ago, and that was just 4 x4watt bulbs. The initial cranking power needed is even more nowadays on modern cars. It's surprising how quickly a 30w or 50w amp can drain a battery down if the engine isn't running. A newer, higher-amperage battery won't suffer so badly as an older, budget jobbie.
Although my old Escort had non-halogen headlights and my Amstrad only ran 4 watts, before I started taking a spare car battery with my on radio meets, I always parked with the car facing down the carpark's gentle slope, so I could always bump-start it if I'd say forgotten to turn the interior light off and fhe battery wouldn't turn the engine over (yet another small battery drain, as well as people asking to use the cigarette lighter..it all adds up).
Another option would be to just use the car's battery as normal, but to buy one of these new-fangled battery boosters that have enough stored power to start a car a few times. You can keep it in the boot.
I used to take an older style one to the car boot sales to run 12v stuff off and used it once or twice to help people out that'd run their batteries down by having their doors and boots open and not switching off their interior and hatchback boot lights.

I run a Towsure split charger in the boot of my Dub to charge up my caravan leisure battery that powers the 857D... works a treat n there is no chance at all of ever flattening my Dub's battery.. i also often use the spare battery for running the PYE A200 amp on 4m.. lasts ages!
