I thought I'd update this thread, it may be useful for anyone wishing to search this very topic. I bought a Diamond X50 and put it on the roof, the feed point is about two foot above the roof, so it gets a really good clear view of the horizon.

Even 10 watts, results have been very impressive, reaching out to some distances I really didn't think I would do.

I chose the X50 as it's a good compromise over size and performance, as I didn't want anything huge up there.

Appreciate your talking about using the x50 on the 2/70 cm amateur bands but just wonder if you have had a chance to try the antenna on rx on the vhf/ uhf pmr bands ? Reason I ask is I have the x50 here just not sure if to bother getting it out up on the roof of the house or just buy a Discone for these particular bands ?

No never considered using it for PMR. With PMR being small power hand helds, I really can't see much occurring on it.

PMR I reckon is still a valid term, the mobile and radio bits make sense, but the P got mangled. Private, public? No idea what the P is now it's attached to 446 in modern conversation. PMR as in business radio turned into LMR with land as the L. No wonder why newcomers get confused. I still think of business radio as PMR, but I'm a dinosaur. White sticks, for the record, are dreadful at the 172+ Frequencies.

Yep your right mate could be wrong but seem to remember the term pb as for taxis, security etc in fact sure the early 80’s radio receivers had markings on the dial for amongst other bands pb..?

Personal mobile radio, private mobile radio or public mobile radio ...who knows ?!

Edit : yep PB bands !
