If you get just a YES or NO answer it will mean either you should already know the answer or you have proved yourself incapable of understanding the answer. Also if you think I need to explain what I type then perhaps you should realise your own limitations

Re: coax
it's not how thick the coax is it's how much of an outer braid it have, an RG-58 military spec with more than 90% braid coverage is as good as some mini 8 and 213 types out there..

Re: coax
For basic chit chat the losses will be acceptable with good quality RG8:
20m of RG8 at 145Mhz = 3.2dB
20m of RG8 at 435Mhz = 5.8dB
Problem is not knowing exactly what quality the coaxial cable is as there are many varieties of RG8 out there.

Re: coax
as i said but obviously not read..
some RG-58 coax's can be better than 213 or mini 8..
even URM76 is better than mini 8 and RG213..
it pays to know what your looking for and not just looking for a brand name and assume because it's a bran name it's good..
Mini 8 will be ok for 2mtrs and 70cms heck i use RG-58 on both my aerials, they work, i can hear and talk to who i want to..
if i was after long distance i'd use Belden 9913 and a decent antenna.!!

Re: coax
The problem is sourcing these low loss coaxial cables as so many retailers just go with whatever their suppliers provide.bigpimp347 wrote:as i said but obviously not read..

Re: coax
Plenty of info here ...
http://www.arrg.us/pages/Loss-Calc.htm
But as stated above there is RG58 and there is RG58 there is also a lot of crap on the market that is branded something else just to sell it, stick with a reputable dealer.

oh good god..!!!!
sharmans means cheap tish..
Knights means, doug has made himself a drink and will be as grumpy as ever he still has that battered old York for sale at £50 yet a minter in his scrap pile..!!
quality coax brands are BICC, Belden, westflex and quite a few others..
cheap crap sold via ebay.. Altai, eagle, sharmans, CB radio and a few no names..
end of the day it'll do the job..
you could have just got hold of some cat5 broadband cable and used that it's 75ohm but a damn sight better than most coax's on ebay and such like..
