Coronavirus: RSGB is introducing remote invigilation for Foundation exams

Post by M3PIE »

Foundation Amateur Radio exams in the UK will be able to resume by using remote invigilation, the Practical Assessments will be waived

Due to the Coronavirus outbreak amateur radio exams in the UK ceased in mid-March, the new online system enables them to restart. Candidates will take the Foundation exam in their own home on their PC or Laptop (Windows 7+) or Apple Mac running Mac OS 10.8+. The invigilation is done remotely, there is no need to complete the Practical Assessments.

The RSGB will be ready to receive online bookings from Monday, April 6. The Society says in due course they will consider extending it to the other licence levels.

The price of the exam is unchanged.

There are reports that a number of RSGB remotely-invigilated, home-based Amateur Radio Foundation online exams have already been successfully completed
The UK is possibly the first country able to offer home-based amateur radio exams nationwide using remote-invigilation. The new system was put into effect in record time by the RSGB in response to the coronavirus outbreak.

UK online ham radio exams prove a great success
As at the end of April 24 the RSGB had successfully conducted 29 remotely-invigilated online amateur radio Foundation exams in people's homes

The Society reports they are currently doing 10 remote exams per day.

The RSGB President and Exam Quality Manager Dave Wilson M0OBW has been a keen proponent of online exams. He has indicated he would eventually like to see the number done each day increased to 15+.

About 350 exams have been booked to the end of May and several hundred additional Foundation exams are in the pipeline. Given the high demand for Foundation exams it seems unlikely any Intermediate or Full exams could be done before the end of May.

Hi all,

The online exams are certainly getting lots of interest at the moment. The RSGB has recently reported that around 350 candidates have booked to take the exam before the end of May, with hundreds more in the pipeline. Demand has been so high that in April we switched from running one online course a month, to two a month, just to keep up with the demand. Our next course starts on Sunday, again with a huge amount of interest.

If anyone wants to find out more about the online exams, we've created an FAQ here: https://www.essexham.co.uk/train/online-exams/

Hope that's of interest,

Pete

A further update from the RSGB.

The latest figures for the RSGB’s remote invigilation of amateur radio exams shows that 116 exams have been run as of Friday the 1st of May. Of these, 109 candidates have passed and a total of 997 different questions have been asked. There are currently 80 exams booked and ready to be taken up until the 8th of May. A total of 300 more are scheduled to take place in May, with a further 187 so far scheduled to take place in June and there are more in the pipeline. The RSGB is grateful to all those working to make this possible during the Covid-19 pandemic.

RSGB to introduce remote invigilation for Foundation Exa
Remotely-invigilated exam numbers released
On Friday, May 1, the RSGB released the figures for UK remotely-invigilated amateur radio Foundation exams
The Society said 116 Foundation exams had been run, of these 109 candidates had passed giving a pass rate of 94%.
This pass rate is very encouraging, the minutes of the RSGB Examinations and Syllabus Review Group (ESRG) meeting held on February 1 had recorded a Foundation pass rate of only 79% for the first five months of the new syllabus up to the end of January.
About 380 exams are scheduled to take place in May and so far 187 exams have been planned for June. The high demand for Foundation exams suggests early booking may be advisable.
ESRG minutes can be downloaded from

There's also a thing about adding /NHS suffix to callsigns. When I asked ofcom about that they said there is no additional regulation about it, so you can (*probably*) use any suffix you like as long as it isn't offensive or misleading etc.

Celebrate the NHS with Get on the air to care.
The RSGB’s Get on the air to care campaign with the NHS is celebrating the 72nd birthday of the NHS on Sunday, 5 July 2020.
The Society is encouraging all radio amateurs to Get on the air to care to mark the celebration and to use /NHS after their call sign.

You can also email photos to [email protected].

Dave Wilson, M0OBW, RSGB President and Exams Quality Assurance Manager, has announced that the 1000th online invigilated exam took place on the 1st of July.

He anticipated that the 1000th successful candidate will pass the exam sometime this coming week. The RSGB would like to thank all involved in this remote invigilation exam process, including Ofcom, the RSGB exams department and all those invigilating. It’s a great example of amateur radio coming together.

RSGB introduces remote invigilation for Intermediate exams

Following the success of remote invigilation Foundation exams, the RSGB is pleased to expand that to include Intermediate level exams.

From Monday 13 July the automated exam booking system will accept bookings for both Foundation and Intermediate level exams.

Please note that the earliest available bookings for exams at either level are during the second week in August.

The requirement for Intermediate practical assessments is waived until further notice but will be reviewed at a later stage.
