Can anyone tell me what is the best antenna for airport/aircraft pickup ?

A good discone will do the job and plenty of coverage.

Depends on distance from airport :)
Sometimes it is a dipole, sometimes multi element Yagi.

cheers ...can i have both and connect them at the same time to a single scanner ...and can i put a dipole in the loft ?

You can put it even in the basement.

I Think you'd find a huge difference between having an antenna in the basement compared to the attic.

Good results can be had from a loft antenna, But its still no substitute for an outside antenna
