Hi folks new to this had a scanner years ago decided I'm 55 and need new hobby I'm laid up after a back op looking for frequency s in my area of Girvan Ayrshire Scotland not a lot to listening to the odd boat on the marine band any help would be greatful for it many thanks tam

Scanning has changed a lot over the past 10 years. Most new systems are now digital so you'll need more expensive kit to receive them. Add on to that the fact that a lot are also encrypted and hard (if not impossible) to decrypt and it makes for an expensive and often frustrating hobby.

If its just a standard Analogue Scanner then the main things left to listen to would be UK Ham Radio, Air Band and low cost 446 Business radio.

There's not much for your neck of the woods in our scanning area (its mainly Glasgow), but you have Prestwick airport not far from you and they get some interesting traffic. Maybe couple that with a free Radar app for your phone and it could be interesting (search for FR24 in your app store) OR https://www.flightradar24.com if you have access to a PC/Laptop

Here are some freqs to get you started and where you'll most-likely hear activity. If you have access to the HF bands (below 30Mhz) then there are more options, but there's a little more kit involved in SWLing down there....
