PMR step size

Post by Rich83 »

Not sure if this is in the right bit or not, but recently found a couple of numpties using the old band plan PMR 446 simplex. I know its between 169.843 - 173.043 but does anyone know the actual frequencies used?

This could be some intresting listening

169.0875
169.3125
173.0500
173.0625
173.0875

These are all current UK General Licence frequencies. You need a licence from Ofcom to actually use these frequencies. It costs ?60 for three years and you need to be a company or organisation.

As all the legal users are either business or official organisations (SJA, Scouts, etc..), any people you hear 'just chatting' are probably illegal users, or legal users operating outside their licence conditions. Absolutely no one who uses these frequencies legally will expect or accept random contacts with anonymous unknown 'breakers'. It's all isolated business nets on these frequencies.

Yeah I was

there not really saying too much per transmission to figure out who they are or what they are doing and so its obvious they are just pratting about but I only get one channel. I tried using quick fill on the butel software with a 12.5 step but it gave me 200 frequencies, way too many to listen to so I just wondered if there were eight channels like on the current PMR band plan

Business radios are (were) programmed by a supplier and quite often they will only program a few of the frequencies that are (were) available, especially if the customer is then handing the radios out to staff. They don't necessarily want their staff having loads of different channels to use and get confused with.

It's possible they may only have a couple of the available frequencies to use. In fact, some radios (especially the cheaper and older models) only have 1, 2 or 4 memories.

Of course, if they are using something like these cheap Chinese imported radios, then all bets are off, they might just be pirating on any frequency they think they can get away with.
