Short wave? What do you want to listen to? I had to look am pro up , to discover it's a make - so looking at them, they seem to all be HF aerials, so that's what you're after? They also seem to be mostly mobile types, so not much use up in the air? Perhaps a long wire, or simple dpole, or something else would be better - and much cheaper to experiment with.

I have AMPRO mobile antennas, but for just that, mobile, their coil is generally as long as the whip, so they are a compromise for TX/RX to save me having 40 metres of wire hanging off of my car, homebase they'll work for RX, but not as well as a dirty great run of cable.

I would recommend a simple SWL Magnetic Loop antenna.

I made mine some time ago now and although only used indoors it works fantastic because it is tunable also.
Mine is 1 meter wide with the feed loop being about 13" both loops made from 10mm Copper Tubing.

Just google SWL Magnetic Loop Antenna I got my idea from THIS SITE but mine is made differently, mine sits on top of a wooden box that houses an Air Variable Capacitor, my loops can be rotated by 360 degrees by hand.

see picture for better understanding.

That website should give you a rough starting point though.

Any wire dipole or loop antenna will outperform Ampro.

Yes, as a base antenna, but as a mobile antenna then AMPRO perform very well for the money, I have several, and our friends at Moonraker stock the full range.
