Alternative Mic' for the KPO DX 5000 (SS6900, AT5555, Etc')

Post by MiXiN »

I'm not too pleased with the stock tiny microphone supplied with these.

Can anyone who uses or has had one of these rigs please suggest an alternative mic' that sounds decent & drives the rig nicely?

Many thanks as always.

Avoid the K-PO mic, so many people get fooled in to buying these from Knights or other shops yet after a few weeks they resort back to the original mic due to them being cheap and poor quality use and sound.

stick with it, it'll be the best you'll find that works. if the radio is set up correctly and not bought from a 40w FM seller.

My brother bought a new Astatic D-104. Don't do the same as him, it is really poor quality and sounds awful. Not a patch on older Astatic stuff.

There is no such thing as a Fidelity 1000 which is too good to scrap.

The NM532 are a very good budget mic which work very well. I've had excellent reports on various radio's using these.

I use the densei 2002 on my alinco dx10 and jackson 2. Audio is far better that the kpo however kpo slightly louder turned up but distorts ssb on alinco.
The 2002 feels far better made, easier in the hand and the flex is far far softer.
I bought the kpo to compare but for me 100% the 2002 is superior in manufacture feel and audio quality and the ptt takes far less effort ,I did lube both ptt keys with vas to improve things some mostly the occasional plastic squeak as it's pressed against plastic cases but again 2002 was better.

I have a densei on my stryker 955 too again brilliant compatibility and on all 3 I get audio compliments .

Nice one for all the replies.

There wasn't a reply on here for a few days, so I did a bit of digging around on the net & found a few good reports on the KPO NM-532 mentioned a couple of times on this thread.

I could only find a couple of sellers as everyone was sold out.

I bought this, reports are very good on all bands, and it feels good in the hand.

Good purchase Sir.

They are quite a sturdy mic. Very well built for the price. I have a couple and wouldn't part with them.

Truth be told, I also have an Astatic Teardrop and a K40 speech processor mic. Nine times out of ten I go for the NM532. I believe the Astatic is a decent mic, but overrated and vastly overpriced. The K40 is OK for what it is so long as you don't mind doing the diode & resistor mod to any radio you want to use it on.

I've decided to temporarily pack away this DX5000 as I'm encountering some real audio issues when an amp is connected.

Have you checked your SWR with the amp running? Both after the amp and between the amp and the radio?

My antenna SWR is fine at around 1.2:1 > 1.5:1 throughout, and my amplifiers play nicely with all my other rigs when on SSB.

The audio just sounds pants when an amp is used with this, and I also get strange intermittent "hi swr" bleep warnings talking on SSB.

I think the rig is poorly designed & susceptible to RF feedback due to poor screening or similar, because as I previously said, I've tried using my amp with 5 or 6 other rigs and all is good.
