All These Years And...

Post by astradyne »

Today I've only just noticed the difference between the newer and older Superstar 360FM boxes. Guessing I've never had them both side by side before and able to apply a little juxtaposition.

Earlier one made in Taiwan and the later one in the Philippines for the French CRT Company. Taiwan version seems the more respected one of the two.

Don't think CRT had anything to do with the Philippine ones . They were all made in the Uniden factory . The Philippine made radios have a better reputation than the Taiwan ones . They made the best radios there . The 148 GTL , 2000 GTL , and my favourite . The black President RICHARD .

I think that the comparison between the Taiwanese and Philippino one is a matter of personal preference.

Both radio's work great. I really can't fault either.

Regarding the terrible caps. Surely at the time (early 1990's) various radio's were being built in the Uniden factory in the Philippines.

Superstar 360FM (President Richard)
President Lincoln (HR2510/2600)
Uniden 2830
President Jackson
President George
Countless Dirland 3900's under various brand names.

And so on...

So, all of the above must have been made using terrible caps? Very doubtful as many thousands of caps at a time will have been ordered and split between each individual line.

French 360's? You mean the Philippines built 360's that were sold in France?

Yes those ones. Perfectly good once the caps are sorted out

I think the later 360FM have the blue Rubicon caps inside. The earlier Taiwan made have the grey YEC caps inside which are known to fail after all the years. I never had any issues with the blue Rubicons.
But all in all, all 360FM work equal, I never noticed any difference.
