Apparently it looks like Dave (Zodiac) according to Nick. It all works though, just an issue to sort out with the bias and voltage regulator to the driver/output.

Thank you Edd.

Just an issue to sort out with the TX. Variable power not working, 2166 driver bias set at 50ma but impossible to set 1969 bias anywhere near where it should be (50ma). Bad SSB audio. Swapped out the A1012 with a brand new TIP42C and problem remains consistent.

Is the bias too high or too low

Might be simple like bad vr had that recently
Or bad 2166 or final
It’s a ball ache but all the pa needs checking ceramic caps resistors diodes etc

I just set those to 0.70v with bias bar out much easier
And quicker.

It jumps about all over the place while trying to set it. Either too high or too low. Never where you want it. There's also a constant 12V from the regulator (both the original and the new TIP42C).

Have you checked for solder bridges? I’d be asking nick or sending it to him probably difficult without seeing it

Think we discussed this 12V issue before Andy ? Someone's either done that intentionally , or you've got a switching problem in that TR48/49 circuit . I've seen people jumpering the main 13.8 V line before to increase the AM power . The radio won't last long doing that .

Regarding the bias . I'd fix the 12V issue first , but given that the driver is OK , then the 8V bias supply line is probably OK . There's not much to that circuit . Disconnect the base of the 1969 and just connect a voltmeter to the pad . Is the voltage 0.7 and stable on USB TX (no audio) ? If it's moving around then you'll need to check R243 , VR9 , R242 , and our friend the MV1Y . Actually you might just want to remove that and stick a 1N4001 in there while you're testing . If the voltage on the pad is stable then the transistor might be bad .

These are all things I'll look into when time permits Sammy. Other than this issue it's a mighty fine radio with a outstanding receive. If I hit a brick wall I'll send it off to Nick. I'm not keen on the SWR/CAL variable power mod so that's one thing that will be put back to stock.

I'll check a bit closer for any solder bridges. Whatever the issue is it's not serious as there's perfectly good TX power on FM. I'm suspecting a switching issue as Sammy suggested. But all advice is welcomed and appreciated.

Yeah . I always remove that too . Best to leave it at the stock 4W .
