Cobra 200 gtl worth buying?

Post by jkb » 05 Sep 2019, 13:37

Opinions please? I’d like one for my collection however, most of the ones on the market are big money for a cb and usually have some kind of defect. Does the version number make a difference and how do you tell? Are they a overpriced for some reason?
Thanks.

No . That's my opinion . Vastly overpriced , and not highly regarded within the community .

Now the 2000 GTL . That's another story :)

Faulty nightwatch gizmos (expensive to repair), dodgy meters with bulbs always blowing, looks are marmite (ok vs tacky) and that's with me knowing nothing about them.

all i can say if you get a good 1 it will drift frequency sound shocking on ssb on hi power and the counter was designed by an idot on a bad day and you will be lucky if the driver fet dont go up in a blaze of glory and burn all the tracks.

if you get a bad 1 ........pitty on you

refuse to work on another 1

The counter doesn't track accurately on these. 27.555.0 TDC bang on frequency. Go to 27.550.0 and the counter is reading nowhere near the correct frequency.

The driver is notorious for hanging up its mortal coil. The V3 wasn't too bad, but amongst the V1 and V2 failures were commonplace and one of the main reasons people sold them on.

Issues with the night watch failing. Many of these radio's now have no backlight. This is even mentioned as a "common fault" in Ebay listings.

I picked one up off Gumtree for £50 of a guy who moved into a new business unit and discovered it in a cabinet. Amazingly everything on it worked despite the counter issue. Still didn't rate it that much though, even at that bargain price, so sold it on through Ebay.

I replaced it with a Stryker SR-955HPC. Very similar in layout but with more modern looks and considerably better performance. Famously good audio on the out of the box stock mic. I know which radio I prefer, and it isnt the Cobra.
Never, ever, ever....bloody anything ever!

Far too many radio's to list here. But I do own a legal one...

Avoid like the plauge mate i had one of these from radiozing when they where first released and had it in the lorry when i worked in holland and despite all the hype i hated it.
The control knobs felt loose with a vauge kind of feel when rotating them there seemed to be exessive play and altho i had no issues with the nightwatch feature i had problems with fluctuating rf output power and the needle used to swing all over whilst transmitting untill it finally popped the outputs so got rid and would not buy another
