The chassis is made of quite thin metal and all of the regulators are on the same side, with very little heatsink for dissipation. I think the AT-5555 and CRE-8900 are similar. Some folk modified theirs and moved the AM regulator to the rear of the chassis and used the heatsink for the pa. The Mckinley is even smaller, so I reckon it's just struggling a little to dissipate the heat. Whether it's a design flaw, is too early to say. If we hear of failures, then yes but way too early to know. It may well be rated adequately for the component spec. Only time will tell.

Why am I obsessed with +30 Drew ? = I'm a CB'er and most CB's go up to a +30.

"Your booming in end of scale" = "booming in on a strong 9".

Why do amateurs need +60 on the meter if their scale for strength is a 9 for very strong ? = better flowers ;)
Plenty are talking worldwide on 27.555 usb,
Some are too far up their own @rse to admit it,
Many happen to know otherwise dx-ing test free,
Showing a complete lack of respect for the law.

Hi all,
This is my first post in forum.
I bought McKinley, export mode, and the only issue I am dealing with is with microphone.
It's like mic gain is at minimum level, like I am talking in low volume or far away from mic.
Mic type is set to "EL", MIC GAIN is at maximum level. My transmition can be heard loud and clear without noise, but listeners complain that thay can hardly hear my voise at all modulations.

Is it a wrong setting that I missed?

There's nothing wrong with it as such, it's just that regulations on FM deviation are very tight these days and FM audio sounds quiet compared to AM or SSB. Also over the years people have become accustomed to hearing stations operating with power mics, often turned up way too high, so your little standard mic will sound quiet in comparison.

You have 2 choices..... Buy a power mic, this will lift your audio level or make a minor internal adjustment to your radio by adjusting one of the tiny pots on the main circuit board.

It's a good little radio. For me the front facing speaker just takes up valuable space, I would have preferred a standard speaker with a bigger screen and a few extra knobs/buttons on the front but the radio certainly works well.

if there was an option to swap or toggle from ch display large and small frequency counter to small ch and large counter that would be a big plus for me

Did anyone had to adjust squelch or ASC level from the main circuit board?

ASC needs signals 8 S to work, can I make it from 6 or 7?

I think what you really want is the screen from the Grant 2 and the chassis from the McKinley.
Me, I wanted a ssb CB with a front speaker and put up with the rest of the radio as it is.

There is a pot inside the radio to adjust the ASC but I haven't made any adjustments to mine yet.

The ASC is a bit vicious (like that on most radios) so I generally use the manual squelch.

Yes that works for sure!!!!
FYI, I also tried a preamp microphone after adjusting the FM mod.
No difference how people hear me comparing with McKinley mic. Power microphone did not lift my audio level.

I believe the radio has an audio limiter but a power mic certainly works on mine. Did you change the microphone type in the menu to DYNAMIC?

The microphone I used was N-PO NM532 and it is electret.
I did tried dynamic though, it was a little bit worse.
