'The horse is here to stay, but the automobile is only a novelty—a fad.'
- Advice from a president of the Michigan Savings Bank to Henry Ford's lawyer Horace Rackham. Rackham ignored the advice and invested $5000 in Ford stock, selling it later for $12.5 million.

The difference being, DAB is already obsolete... ;)

It is crap even through a decent set of headphones. The wife got me a £150 set of Yamaha headphones for my birthday. On DAB it stills sounds flat, plug them through my cd player/turntable or FM tuner and they sing.

Listening to a poor audio source will always sound bad on decent equipment. If anything, it makes bad qualities of the audio more perceptible

LBC to return to national DAB radio very soon! In my opinion,if they just bit the bullet and charged the same rate as FM licences and upped the bit rate and put decent channels on instead of bunging up DAB with the stuff that sounds like intergalactic battles and whiney lassies boaking and guys with speech impediments (yes I come from an era where you could distinguish different singers and the styles were 2 tone, new wave, metal,AOR,disco, soul and funk,,not the mince that passes for music these days! -- 1970's/80's rule!!)

Wasn't gonna write anything more today on here but have to add my bit on DAB. I used a Pure Highway in my van for a few months. Had to sort the aerial out, the wire windscreen one is crap. Made a good antenna from an old pmr mag-mount and cut a 1/4 wave. Worked well but still DAB is crap. Radio 6, the so called music station is full of **** DJs who talk all over the songs, BBC 4 extra broadcasts stuff that's 60 years old, all the others are wall to wall commercials. The only plus is BBC 5 live. My DAB radios at home won't receive Radio Norfolk although I can rx it on 95.1mhz on my Yaesu VX7 with a stubby antenna. DAB is a dead loss..Anyone wanna buy a Pure Highway??

Sadly FM up here is 98% full of faecal matter! We have radio at work,in our department we tend to listen to AM rather than FM because the FM stations are total sewerage! Having said that, one local radio station springs to mind that back in the day it was fantastic, but now it's total diarrhoea thanks to the yoof who wouldn't know what music is if you whacked them in the scone with a Police or Ultravox album!

Most (so-say) intendant local radio is crap with what seems like robots reading from cue cards. I got a DAB radio for Christmas for the bedroom. Classic FM relaxes me through the night and if I'm in there during the day its Absolute 80's or 90's.

I get the point of the DJ's talking all over the songs. Pain in the arse.

Classic FM is relaxing, and has widened my classical collection a bit too!

Independent Commercial Radio is invariably sheet. For example, the Heart group of stations use.a.computer selected playlist, which means endless repeats of Hamsters Paradise and Don't Speak by No Doubt, interspersed with the occasional current top 40 choon. I've long since retreated to Radio 4, with occasional interludes of Planet Rock until the adverts start to annoy me.

I'm pretty certain the DJ's talking over the tunes is something to do with prevention of copyright infringement, just incase folk are recording it just as we probably did back in the day with a cassette recorder beside the radio speaker or from your folks HiFi unit, correct me if I'm wrong.Yes it is very annoying when you are listening to a favourite track and they start yapping over the track or cut it short etc!
Interesting to see the contributors to this particular thread seem to have a similar dislike of the "sewerage" that masquerades as music these days! Hardly surprising, not so long ago I unfortunately got landed with watching the videos that accompany the said sewerage,so they've an almost bordering on porn video to sell their crap music because they are so talentless!! And you wonder why we prefer to listen to specialist stations such as Classic FM /Absolute 80's etc!! DAB has its place,,the powers that be just need to realise the audience potential if upping the bit rate etc and more specialist stations of the Planet Rock/Absolute 80's/Classic calibre were given the chance.

The DJs are arrogant and genuinely believe that the sparkling wit that flows from their gobs is better to listen to than the music. I mean, obviously, right? Otherwise any old plonker could play the music and say "that was... this is....", but these DJs are paid for their own special unique personalities, so they must be worth their weight in bitcoin, right?

Right.

i remember years ago listening to pennine radio in w yorks and they all ways spoke just as the musci track was finishing so think it is right about people recording them and rights.

after moving i all ways got horrid signals on fm and struggled and with dab coming along it was a god send for me so guys don't pull dab down too much as it does come in handy for those in situations like me.

any way i came across smooth radio and they play most of the 80's songs i like and bedtime it is better than listening to those stations blasting out heavy rock all night long, nothing worse it you are a poor sleeper.

one thing since listening they never seem to broadcast till the music finishes which is a good thing and only have a few adverts in between.

as for quality did notice it sounds a bit flat but with good bass it will soon boost it, got a revo pixis rs and that really does boost the dab sound quality.

out of interest did purchase a sony player years ago and it picked up well in excess of 40 plus dab stations so what was that all about, since then on my new ones can only get around 14 to 16 stations.
