eQSO / EchoLink-type link for TM net?

Post by MrWeetabix » 15 Oct 2008, 11:06

Alright, me and Dean were talking on MSN till the wee small hours and this idea popped back into my head again...

We were discussing PSK31 interfaces using VOX on 706 / 857D / 817 and how to connect to PC. I use an external sound card and then a basta@dised cat5 cable which splits into AF out and Mic in 3.5mm jacks to suit the sound card spk out and line in. The PSK31 audio trips the VOX and away it goes...

eQSO and/or Echolink nodes work in the same way! so basically we already have two node points ready to go. I had previous discussed on the forum the possibility of getting some simple VOX circuits knocked up, this would allow anybody with basic soldering skills to hook up any rig (big, small, cept, ssb, fm, whatever) to be a working node.

Could the guy who was gunna make these give me a price please? i would be willing to pay up-font for the hardware and then sell-on to other TMS to get them setup. Hell, I'd even do the soldering for them! haha

anyone interested in this concept? I had thought that local Node managers would have descretion as to which frequency to host the net on, whichever is best for the most local TM users. 446 could even be used if that was a viable option :-). For instance, I'd probably host mine at the bottom of mid band CEPT. A list of areas/freq could be published on the forum, so you'd simply tune to your local freq and away you go. Hows that sounding guys?

I have bought a small Vox unit off of that ther Flea Bay, along with some other components to rig it all up to either the Amstrad 901 on muppets, or one of the bigger radios for a more descreat channel (not that there's ever many people on muppets round here)

I hope to have this rigged up in a few weeks, how is anyone else setup to get somehting live? Any progress?

Thanks MrWeetabix... I pretty much fell off the CB/amateur radio scene from the early 90's so missed all these happenings. I take it then PSK31 is a digital chat system... Very interesting, and quite boring for the normal CB Morons that seem to still be about occasionally, I would like to try this... Can anyone advise suitable software for an Asus EEE running eeebuntu ???

Probably the most active freq during the day will be 14.070 USB. Best of luck :)

Lets try keep this on topic as I am intrested in this.

What band are we planning on using? Pmr446/cb hopefully.

I'd try and stay clear from using vox, It's very slow method of linking.

I have a small circuit I used for ptt interface , It's about 3-4 components and some veroboard. Although theres no isolation methods it worked fine with my 706 for years and never had a problem (now setup to work with a cb), I'd suggest just using it on cheap rigs incase. I use a fully isolated ptt interface for my best radios.

I can draw a diagram up, Even probably get some kits together people can build/add their own audio leads for pennies.

Fez, if you cna estimate a cost of the kit, I'll fund the first batch, if you can make 5 or so, then we can distribute to interested parties!

Look forward to this!
