HF Radio Wideband Modification Service - recommendations

Post by MrWeetabix »

Evening all, have recently purchased an Icom 7410 I am looking to have the wideband TX modification done so I will have access to 60m.

Now, I have done the mod to an Icom 746 before without issue, and I had wrongly assumed it was the same on this radio, but apparently you need to ADD diodes on this radio! So whilst I was happy to have a go at removing the diodes, I dont think I have the skills, experience or balls to attempt adding them myself (nor do I have any for that matter). I know, I am a wuss! Haha

Can anyone recommend any reputable service engineers who may do offer this service? I have contacted the major vendors for a price, as well as our most-respected Radio mender Mr Nick (black spirit) on here, but maybe someone else out there could recommend someone else? Do Castle still do radio servicing for example, or are there any other places I could drive to locally (within an hour’s drive from Newcastle) perhaps?

Thanks in advance people. 👍

Go to any cellphones service point, show them that to remove or add. They deal with bigger challenges daily.

I have asked Nick via PM but he has not been on the forum for a few days, so not heard back from him.

Its all small SMD type stuff you see. I can just about sort a removal, but not an addition :-/

Had a reply from Nevada and they don’t offer the service. Unsure of that applies to new radios they sell as they didn't say.

Well you could enquire at Martin Lynch's about?

smd work best done with a heat gun, I have a rework station and done a few bits of smd work over the last few years for myself. It's a bit daunting at first but I found it ok once I got heat temps right and improved technique. My hands aren't as steady as they used to be and I use magnifying equipment but I managed ok, only you can decide if you want to have a go at yourself though. Failing all this I'm sure somebody on here maybe able to assist you on.

I don't think it's the kind of thing he does tbh. I could be wrong though.
