Meanwell power supplies question

Post by MorseMan »

Hello all.
I'm looking at a genuine MEANWELL LRS 350-12 switching power supply to possibly use in the shack.

As many switchmode supplies can be horrendously noisy when used to power radios, I was wondering if any of you guys use them.

Are they a noisy supply & if so what have you done to cure it ?

I know sometimes you can change some components to make them quieter but haven't managed to find any details.

How well do they stand up to heavy load to no load use, In other words sending morse code.

Any opinions & advice on these supplies would be most welcome.

Thanks in advance

In the market for a second psu myself and lately been thinking of going for one of these type off power supplies. What bothers me as from a bit of research on the subject some of them struggle to be modded to provide the full 13.8v +- and require slight modding to accept the straight connection of power cables from our rigs etc.

Will certainly look out for the DPS600PB , can I ask what the voltage / max amp it will provide ?

Most meanwell 12v supplies will go to 13.2 Or 13.3 volts which should be enough.

What a bargain eh ! It’s the modding of the voltage and power supply connections that I would struggle with.

Plenty info online regarding modding them to power radios, In most cases its pretty straight forward, The voltage can normally be tweeked by adjusting a pot on the PCB

If your planning on using one of these to power an amp you really need the voltage as close to 13.8 V as possible. Otherwise they'll be an noticeable drop in output power from the amp,

Ok thanks yep that’s what I mean, my new G90 will accept from 12 to 15 volts but appreciate other items like a linearrequire a constant higher voltage .
As ch25 above has his bp600 version running at 14v am guessing it is possible for these particular models to be modded to achieve this voltage.

I Think some models struggle to achieve the full 13.8 volts, But yea seemingly these models will, The only reason i know some linears need the full whack is because drew auld geek had a problem getting full power from his linear using a 12v server supply, Think he dropped around 80 watts,

Good thread on the subject

To raise voltage to ~14V OVP trigger point must be changed too. Easy to do if you have PS already opened.
