Coronavirus (Covid-19) and Increased Ham Activity

Post by solarstorm »

Hi,

Ive been listening alot on SDRs and it seems that ham activity has recently increased?. It could be due to the fact that if more and more people either choose to self isolate that it could be sparking off a surge of hams dusting there sets down and picking up there mics??

Maybe if the whole country went on lockdown and everyone had to stay in and if the mobile network or internet got overloaded then ham radio may seem a good way for people to keep in contact through this difficult time.
your thoughts please.....

I've seen a few mentions ham radio. I'm in isolation myself I'll be on more than usual.

We are social creatures, the virus is one thing, the social isolation it's creating is another. Radio will have a role to play more than ever now I think for those that have one.

OK, anyone lives local to me needs anything, let me know I will do my best to help.

(Telford area)

And we as radio enthusiasts can speak with those over the radio that are tied to their homes. Don't let anyone feel lonely. If you have a radio, lets use it!

Now is the time to switch on and make some contacts!

Lets get busy talking

Lot's of 2m FM. Two separate QSOs on 2m sideband, and one on 4m FM tonight. Certainly an increase in activity here, IO83.

Been listening on Hack Green SDR , jodrell bank SDR and 160m.net SDRs . Certainly a significant increase since this lockdown been put in place. I'm suspecting I might have contracting the virus as have some of the mild symptoms . Trying to keep myself mentally occupied with listening to SDRs and watching Netflix. Going to be a long 3 weeks , maybe more ....

I've been furloughed since 27th March, with the prospect of it going on til the end of June. My kit has never had so much use. Even when conditions are bad, I am 'educating' myself, tweaking bits, watching a lot of YouTube experts showing how to make ununs, transformers etc, getting inventive as to how I can stealth install EFHW antennas (I live in a 3rd floor flat, but have a nice big Beech tree outside!). Starting to play with digital modes now too, and very slowly trying to learn Morse.
