President Barry - repairable?

Post by Hair Bear »

Hi, can these rigs be repaired anywhere? Fault as follows...

Switch on, all appears ok. Volume up/down operates ok. UK/EU switches ok.
Start to rotate squelch control anticlockwise - static heard.
Rotate squelch fully anticlockwise to ASC position, ASC shows on screen, static still heard. Don't think that's right.
TX, all appears ok, rising outgoing strength bars showing on screen, outgoing signal and mod checked good at 3 miles range.
RX, receives good incoming signal and mod from 3 miles range, but sig strength bars missing from screen. Double check from 10ft adjacent vehicle and still no sig bars.
Rotate squelch clockwise until static disappears, all incoming signals are gone, even from 10ft range. Checked on various channels and between UK/EU.
The squelch control appears to cut out all received signals.

Swapped the mic out, no change, tried with and without ext speaker, no change.
SWR checked ok and all works fine with a substitute rig.

Can the Barry be saved or is it now a doorstop/paperweight?
Any advice appreciated.

I know nothing about the repair side of things sorry, but it sounds like it could be uneconomical to repair after costs and postage both ways etc. If it's one of these surface-mount tech boards, that won't help matters either.

The new Barry 2 is about £80-odd new, so second-hand early versions like yours would probably cost about the same as it'd cost to get yours fixed...with no guarantee that something may not go wrong again with it again at some point in time.

It's a shame for any radio to end up in the scrap drawer, but personally, it may be better to start looking for a replacement unless someone can come up with a solution to your current issues.

Fingers crossed ;)

Thanks. I took the lid off, nothing in there I recognised. Just a dozen or so tiny black squares scattered across the board. A trip to the Weee bin methinks.
