A Harvard "Good Buddy" makes even a Fidelity 1000 look good

Three good points about the fidelity 1000
.they were cheap to buy after everyone realised they were not much cop
.you could easily find your friends due to the poor selectivity
.it was better than having no CB at all
there you go three good points

Didn't the RF gain just turn the meter up and down without actualy reducing the signal?
But it does seem like every man and his dog were re-branding these heaps, sorry, classic radio's.

One radio which in many way I would argue was worse was the Maxcom 20E
I had one as my first radio.
If someone came on any channel giving more than an S9 it would make all of the other channels almost completely deaf.
It had fragile plastic covers which let in mains and other interference, it had a side mount din socket and the microphone was quiet and gave poor audio.
The squelch was extremely choppy and needed constant adjustment.
They still sell for reasonable money for some reason.
I replaced mine with a skiptech Ti4000 which wasn't much better.

There is no such thing as a Fidelity 1000 which is too good to scrap.

There is a Transcom and a Commtel version on the bay, I would be tempted but until I move house into the country side I'm not sure if there is any CB activity.

Is there a cheap way to improve the rx on these radios ie:better filter ?

They were always pretty good on RX anyway. I just felt the TX audio always sounded a bit flat compared to most and the incoming audio sounded the same.
Just ensure it's tweaked as per spec's and you won't be able to do much better with one.
Personally, I always preferred my Amstrad 901 if you're just after a cheap UK40 "runaround" and you don't nind LED's.
Do love my old Fidelity Homebase though lol

I started with an Amstrad 901 and found it to be a great radio and love the led meter.I can remember a friend of mine had the Midland 2001 which was total rubbish (It did look nice) it was unusable until a local rig doctor changed the filter. From then on it worked much better and I wondered if the same could be done to the Fidelity. I am just about to move but at the moment there are at least 10 breakers within less than a mile of me which causes RX probs.

That many locals??? Blimey, that'd wipe out most people's radios, let alone that fact that most people run extra power to reach further nowadays.
If you had a Fidelity 1000 or 3000, you'd stand no chance. The 2001 had an Amstrad board in so is slightly better and the 2000 is the best one as it has the Cybernet board in.
If you want maximum RX but good protection against strong, local signals, then the filtered version of the Magpie was supposedly one of the best radios for that. Might cost a bit though. If you're moving where there's no one for miles, then you can choose whatever you like
I found the Uniden-boarded radios good against locals, but not quite as receptive as Cybernet-boarded stuff, so it's "swings and roundabouts".
The old radios that were slagged-off at the time for being "broadband-boxes" as we used to call them, are now coming into their own as their lack of decent flitering means they're very receptive. The nasty, cheapo radios out there may now be your best bet for pulling in distant signals, providing you have no other users within about 5 miles of you and don't mind people laughing when you tell them that your pride and joy is an Economy 40/Fidelity 1000/Supertuned DNT etc etc!

Makes you wonder why they made so many clones of this heap. Yet again they made plenty sequels of the highlander films after loosing a ton of cash on the first one
I Am the great cornholio are you threatening me ?
