1970's - 80's CB Shops..
Hi All,
Just doing some reminiscing about the days of old regarding CB's and I'm trying to recall some of the CB shops (Rig Shacks) in my area (North Staffordshire).
I remember one in particular which was run by a guy named Bill and his son, it was called "CB City", a proper kind of CB shop somehow and Bill was a rig doctor too, very knowledgeable, I seem to remember it changing site in about 1982 as the old one had to be knocked down in a compulsory clearance.
We also had one located in Hanley which was a town centre back street terraced type shop, also a great place and a great place to go on a Saturday morning to meet up and "Eyeball" (Do they still say that?).
There was also EARS (Escort and Rally Spares) over in Macclesfield, nice little run out to see the latest rigs and twigs.. Nice people too.. A family affair.
I'm sure there were more in my area, but they've slipped my mind, if anyone can shed light on the matter I'd love to read your responses..
Also for you folks not from my neck of the woods, I'm sure we'd love to hear about your shops too..

Local to me were Spannermans in Wolverhampton ,originally he sold under the counter AM rigs and equipment from his Mechanics shop/garage and then later had a shop with an old guy called cloud Nine running it. In Brierley Hill ( part of Dudley) There was the CB shack ) it was about as big as a shed and full of CB gear , this shop still stands with a base loaded base antenna still bolted to the roof but has been derelict for at least 15 years.

There were about 8 CB shops in my area, one mobile and a number of garages dabbled in selling equipment as well.

Re: 1970's - 80's CB Shops..
In Leeds there used to be Super Slab and Michelle's Radio on Hunslet Road.
Michelle's was part of a dilapidated roadside row of shops. Inside was always incredibly musty and old fashioned with a plethora of UK40 rigs under a glass counter. They later moved to Holbeck and then Armley. As CB declined in the 2000's they began dealing only in taxi radio's but even that didn't last long and they closed in 2003 if my memory serves correctly.
Super Slab was right on the Leeds/Wakefield border in Tingley. In the mid 90's they began trading as Leeds Amateur Radio and ran one of the local repeaters. Again they didn't survive far into the 2000's. No doubt due to the advent of mobile phone's, computers and the Internet.
Super Slab appear to still be trading though. Or at least the name is still in use as part of LAMCO. There's even a Facebook page.

Re: 1970's - 80's CB Shops..
Have to know Bradford & Halifax areas for these ones....
Horse Trader (Derek) near to the old tram sheds at Thornbury. Aire Valley CB at Thackley. There was another CB shop at the bottom of Windhill in Shipley but can't recall the name. Empress Trading on Thornton Road - ran for a long long time. Another CB shop that was situated on Keighley Road between The Royal Pub and Bingley Grammar School, again can't recall the name of. There was one in Halifax at the top of Hanson Lane I discovered while passing through in the early 90's, he may have been there in the 80's also. Not forgetting all the high street shops that jumped on the CB craze in the 80's that started selling them as well certain petrol stations here and there. Regarding Super Slab / LAR - last purchase I made from there was about 2004 -ish. Called in for some plugs, coax and some other bits.
Knights (who are still trading) and Truck King (there's a thread on here regarding TK I think) Both shops I visited in person a few times in the late 80's early 90's and also purchased stuff from them both via mail order.
Ahh, those were the days.

The one In Brierley Hill was called the CB Cabin, run by a guy whose handle was Delta.PARSNIPHUNTER wrote: ↑07 Feb 2021, 15:30 Local to me were Spannermans in Wolverhampton ,originally he sold under the counter AM rigs and equipment from his Mechanics shop/garage and then later had a shop with an old guy called cloud Nine running it. He had a video shop underneath, memorable for me cos he fixed a few radios for me and the phone was nearly always answered by a woman with a thick welsh accent, Kind of like Ruth Maddock in Hi-De-Hi...."hellooo caaampers!"
As you say the place is still there but derelict.
Shame cos little places like that were great for checking out different radios and for getting spares and antennas etc.

Very true. The little places crammed with all sorts were very handy.QRZ-934 wrote: ↑10 Feb 2021, 20:30 The one In Brierley Hill was called the CB Cabin, run by a guy whose handle was Delta.
