Re: Smelly radios
I did try and buy some in the Oxford Maplin store the other day but they didn't have any.
I was expecting the alloy wheel foam to shift the smell but it didn't.

There is no such thing as a Fidelity 1000 which is too good to scrap.

Re: Smelly radios
Not that I know of. I have ordered some from Amazon.
I am not very hopeful of it working, but am prepared to give it a try.

Re: Smelly radios
spray it on i'd allow it to soak in to the surface of the lids etc... The other option is to remove the lids, fascia and knobs and leave them to soak in some hot water for a few hours.

Re: Smelly radios
I did think about leaving them to soak so that the contamination would leech out, but was worried about the inside of them going rusty.
Normally I dry them pretty much straight away so there isn't a problem.

Re: Smelly radios
A radio I bought reeked of fags. I cleaned it best I could with various non destructive cleaners, put up with the smell for best part of a year and realised some time back that it no longer smells.
Time heals all things, including smells apparently.

Re: Smelly radios
Well another worring aspect has surfaced.
it has started making my other radios smell, so I have put it into quarantine.
It was tood on top of my 360 with a layer of 6mm thick foam between them and the smell has still got through.
Hopefully I have seperated them in time.

Re: Smelly radios
I would have marinaded it in Servisol super 10, and then put it up the loft for a few months
Probably find it again in December, whilst retrieving Christmas decorations

Re: Smelly radios
I found the easiest way was to sell it.
I can always buy another as they not especially rare.

Re: Smelly radios
I needed a Windows laptop a couple of months ago......picked one up second hand from a local computer shop and the previous owner must have smoked heavily whilst using it, made the room stink so left it plugged in & running in the shed for a day and it soon cleared itself ! wiped everything down with anti bac wipes and seems Ok

Re: Smelly radios
I am digging this up again as I have just received a microphone which smells like it came from a working mans club.
The seller is getting annoyed that I wish to return it, saying it was spares or repairs and there were 8 pictures. I am not sure how you could tell if it smells from a set of pictures?
I haven't even bothered unwrapping fully it as the smell is enough to make me feel sick.

Re: Smelly radios
I guess the last thing you want from a mic is it stinking as you need to put it so close to your face ...
My suggestion would be to pull it apart and soak all the non electrical parts in something potent. Leave the electrical somewhere airy for a week or two..
Whilst I’d do my best not to sell something that smells, I’m not sure I’d be keen on offering a refund for such a situation either ...
Was it particularly rare/ expensive ?
Sell it on and buy another - or do a deep clean !

The best liquid treatment for tobacco stink is denatured alcohol.
