CB Radio in popular culture

Post by ryan_paul »

Hi all

This is not an original thead But I thaught it was worth resorecting again.

After reading the thread about Smokie and the bandit being on TV I though it might be worth remebering some of the other items of popular culture that made CB radio so popular in the 70s and 80s.

heres wat I have so far.

- Smokie and the bandit
- The dukes of hazard
- Convoy
- Breaker Breaker

please add to the list

cheers.

Breaker Breaker is a classic! Chuck Norris with a CB - how much better can a movie get!?

Let's not forget Mad Max - plenty of CB use there.

Roger that good buddy

Norirs and CB cant beat that.
Have you noticed that chuck is tougher in films where he has a beard
then when he is clean shaven.

Convoy is also a fantastic film.
It must have taken a lot of gutts to say to the film company you want to make a film based on a song.

Films are all well and good, but how many people went to the cinema and watched them? Whereas the TV series D of H was there week in week out, a constant CB presence, especially for the kids.
I reckon the D of H did more to glamourise CB for my generation than any of the movies.

I vaguely remember a rig being demonstrated on Blue Peter too, LOL

If you get the chance, check out a film called 'the gladiator' 1986. Its a revenge film and he puts a cb/police radio in his truck and chases dangerous drivers. Why has it all gone so boring?

I remember from the days of watching German channels on Astra analogue satellite TV a few years ago now... being very confused by the weird American soft-porn films from Russ Meyer ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russ_Meyer ) which I still find hard enough to follow in English let alone in badly dubbed German on Sat 1!
I remember one of them (Supervixens? review http://www.girlsgunsandghouls.com/supervixens.html ) features loads of close-ups of... CBs.. although all those ample chests are a bit distracting :)

I can also remember it being demo'd on Tomorrow's World along with an AM CB, they made a point of saying they had special permission from the Home Office for the test and IIRC there was a representative in the studio, presumably to make sure they didn't bring down a 747 on it's finals into LHR

One of my faves from the late 70's was BJ & the Bear, much use of CB to outwit Sheriff Lobo 8) .

what about coronation street im sure eddy yates met his girlfriend on a "eyeball"

1982 started well for Eddie when he met Marion Willis after chatting with her on CB radio, calling himself "Slim Jim". To impress "Stardust Lil",

Well, whoever wrote the Die Hard movies is a radio nut.

Die Hard has UHF CBs used in it, extensively.
Die Hard 2 has Kenwood 2m sets (handies and a big base set) using speech inversion.
Die Hard with a vengeance has a lot of CBs (cobras this time) and a Cobra Marine band radio on the freight ship. The rig in the taxi is a Cobra 19 Ultra - I had one at the time.
Die Hard 4.0 also has 2m set - the 145.330 frequency clearly visible on the 'police' radios - they're ADI AR-147s. There's also a base 'CB' in it - but it's tune to '666' - which appears to be 66.6Mhz when McLean talks to him later.

All the rigs used in the first Smokey and the Bandit appear to be Pace ones.

And you forgot "Joyride" - I got the name wrong the first time - blame my sister!
