I thought it was longer than that, 2010ish, I don't know a lot has happened to me since then (as you know I guess) I remember the letter inside the box, I'll have to find the radio out , a great radio

Discriminator output is for packet radio use so the fm signal bypasses the filtered audio on receive.
Also can be used for other data modes Ft8chat and maybe pager decoding if there is any in your area.
Its quite a handy facility to have if you are into data modes
