Contact Knights and ask them to check any other units they have. If they are all the same, then its a manufacture/set up fault.
If none of their other 7900V units show incorrect readings then yours is faulty.
As its a new radio get it sorted before warranty expires.

i got this back from Knights , will just need to put up with it and turn rf gain a bit

Unfortunately there is no adjustment for the signal meter.
I am surprised you are getting practically 0 on other radios because there is usually a lot of noise about nowadays from all the electronics, we never get less than s7.

Hello

There are no user adjustable components in this radio. They settle these things by computer

Please look at here

I set my 7900V with a signal generator as per this link. https://www.transmission1.net/viewtopic.php?t=60254

You can not set the radio up S meter wise or Squelch wise with out one. I found the S meter settings way out along with the squelch setting being way to sharp it was either on and only strong signals came through or it was off. I also put it bang on frequency after a few months as it dropped down a little after a few months of use. not alot but say 27.781.25 became 27.781.19 but you wouldnt notice on FM for sure.

Great radio though and the NR works well, sensitive and sounds good all round.

pleased with it but factory settings could be much better out of the box. RSI also missing from software with this radio, unlike the previous version.

The CRT 7900V works really well and is probably the best CB/10m radio out there at the moment.

I find the s-meter operates in line with my other radios to be honest. You can adjust it in the engineering menu with a signal generator but the easiest way is to just reduce the RF gain a bit.

I agree its a very good radio and the digital noise reduction works very well however for me the s meter is anoying , i got a loan of my brothers kenwood 570 and a couple of cb types and all show what my radios are showing s0 or very slightly above however the 7900v is a 5 , a few others have said the same and i had the same with the original 7900 , it must just be those radios. i will just put the rf down and try not to think about it lol

i was sent this from this web https://dd182003.wordpress.com/

You are right Jim. The later radios all have this noise issue. It is like it has a pre amp engaged.
No antenna hooked up : No noise. Antenna and noise appears. The NR wipes out the noise very well but the needle still sits on 7 at my location.
I have been able to contain it by adjusting the RF Gain in the system menu

Originally it was set at 86. I cranked it up to 105 and here is what I now have.
With the RF gain set at about 4pm everything is quiet S meter down on zero with antenna connected and no signal. Works OK with a signal but won’t peg, but the noise is gone and S meter sitting on S7 is gone until a sigal is heard. Volume gets turned up to bring some noise up but if someone comes on they can be too loud!

Turn the RG gain up to 5pm and beyond and woosh..the noise comes up just like a preamp. Its neat..
I like it. Best of both worlds.
I think the full cure lies in the system menu and has something to do with the DSP settings as well. I am sure Anytone or someone will sort it out because the earlier N2 radios were not like this and possibly the other brands using same boards are not either. They all share the same boards and menu system so I am sure we will get to the bottom of it before too long. Fingers crossed it is not a component issue.

Regardless it is still the best 10/11 meter radio I have had the pleasure to use and now as I am exclusively on 10 and 11m the icom and Yaesu have been put away. No need for the fancy bits. This radio does it all and does it easier.

If you would like to make some menu changes I will spell it out in another post. Its not difficult and will not mess up the radio as long as you only adjust the one setting. I adjusted it all over the place. I originally thought it needed to be turned down but that made very little difference and did not solve the S meter movement at all. So with nothing to lose I started turning it up and noticed things starting to happen. 105 seemed to be the sweet spot for my radio. I now have a preamp! Is there an IF gain control in there too?
Cheers,
Dave

its been a few days now and i have left mine at 100 in menu 52 which seems a good compromise on my 7900V, weak signals get through and no more anoying high s meter, it will do until when/if there is a fix , Jim , DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK
