Ceramic Capacitor sourcing question

Post by 3pinplug »

Hi all

Have a ceramic capacitor question, I need to source accoring to the parts list a:-

68pf N220 100% ceramic capacitor

I looked on fleabay and ordered some 68pf ceramic caps but when they arrived they were really tiny in physical size compared to what I need, is that because technology has moved on, my rig is from the end of the 1970's. The size of the body diameter of C1 is about 8mm.

The attached pic shows C1 fitted but this has been removed on my rig and a 120K ceramic cap fitted to the legs of a green cored can and this contraption fitted in its place, not sure what thats all about so am putting it back to standard but I need to locate the ceramic cap to be able to do this.

Is the physical size of a ceramic important i.e must they be they same dimension when being replaced or is only the value important, know a bit about electrolytics but nothing about ceramics, also whats the N220 & 100% mean?

Thanks in advance.

SIze of ceramic capacitor is dependent on it's capacity and operating voltage.
Higher voltage, bigger it is.
68pF/50V is tiny, rated 500V much bigger.

Hi Ch25

So when it lists:-

68pf N220 100%

does the N220 shown above mean its 220V which would account for it being bigger in size from what you say.

Thanks.

They have become smaller in size over the years as well. Think I posted on this a few years back.

N220 indicate Temperature Coefficient of Capacitance (TCC)
It describes the maximum change in capacitance over a specified temperature range.
