That was pretty quick! From up and running to gone in a couple of hours!
some things on tm1 get a good run, some dont.... i think the debate was a valid one as it needs to be aired and sorted out to be fair.

**** part of it all is there's always 2 sides to every story and i dont think people can see the inns and outs of the whole dmr story.
Are we talking about the thread that was locked yesterday?

To be fair why would we want aggro from elsewhere being brought on here.

But yes, there are two sides to the tale.

I think he meant the Facebook group.

But yes, I locked the thread because TM1 is not somewhere that I want to become the overspill from a Facebook group gone wrong.

In a nutshell, it's called politics.

If I had have known it was going to get this bad I would have had second thoughts of getting a licence.

There's been more mess than the aftermath of a school yard brawl.

I'd call it a dictatorship myself because if you don't adhere to what certain people tell you to do the repeaters are off and the teddy is out of the cot..

Basically there is aggro regarding a few users not agreeing with the request to only use the minimum number of resources necessary to hold your QSO. Some feel that the UK wide talkgroup is available to use for QSO's, rather than calling. The request was made by one keeper to QSY to another group using less resources, resulting in said keeper being labelled 'Band Police' and other derogatory comments being made both on air and on the mentioned Facebook Group.

The Facebook politics can stay over there.

But, just something to consider when addressing the question of resources. I know that the keeper in question (G1XCC) runs several repeaters. Many of these are run using 4G routers for internet connectivity. They cost money to operate. There is also the question of electricity. It all has to be paid for. I did hear an estimate that if you use TG1, you open all repeaters worldwide and that costs collectively about £25 per minute in electricity alone.

So, while some may think it acceptable to open every repeater in the country on every over, is it being fair on the keepers who provide the repeater services FOC, supported only by voluntary donations?

Politics, Dictatorship....... and so the list goes on. With limit resources in this part of the hobby one has to have consideration for keepers, resources and other users (which other users forget about). As much as people do rightly mention about data usage, electricity usage... what about blocking others users from using the resource?

In the UK we have 5x always on TG's (1, 2, 9, 13 & 235), 6x UA TG's (80, 81, 113, 119, 123 & 129), 3x repeater links (803, 821 & 822) so when TG235 seems quiet there are 9 other TG's that could be in use of which 3 (the repeater links) may not be available to you so you wont know people are using slot 1 unless you check the live monitor and you wont hear the UA TG's unless they have been activated on your repeater or you key them up. If people hold qso's on "calling channels" then it does hamper usage of the other talk groups especially as the length of a pause (when people do leave one) is not long enough for the carrier to drop and allow another user time to key up another TG.

No licence or NoV states how the networks run - users only have the right to local usage.

so if your able to have a QSO UK WIDE but etiquette implies that you should move to a local TG to save electricity, what happens if im in yorkshire and i want a regular QSO with a friend down south?
we can use a local TG, so would it be acceptable to use 235?

Call your mate on 235 by all means, then clear off to say TG80, which is user activated. If I have understood the network correctly that then locks out TG1,2, 235 etc on those repeaters using TG80, so you can carry on your QSO undisturbed, while leaving other repeaters available for others. And yes blocking for others is an issue to also consider.

On paper the system is very good, sadly the theoretical model doesn't take the human element into consideration.

As a lot of the human DNA is programmed to kill things and fight then this situation isn't surprising.

It is the repeater keepers responsibility to maintain the standards on their repeater, same as it's TM1s admin team that are responsible for stuff written on their site, so if there is abuse in the RKs opinion then they have to act, they don't want their repeaters offline.

If I were a RK then I wouldn't want someone self-appointed as the DMR king or queen to tell me what I should or should not do with my system.

Hmm let me think on that conundrum?...........
Have you ever considered talking to your mate "down south" on any one of the VERY good for inter G communications, (at whatever time of the day suits the frequency), HF bands?
I believe ALL licence classes have access to most of them?
No 4G needed, no routers, no internet bandwidth, and the only "electricity" that gets gobbled up is whatever you individually use at each end! ;)

And as a bonus, no "its my ball and I'm going home" repeater politics in the mix either, and the internet gets left to what its best at, social media crap, pornography, and unsolicited spam mails! :lolno:

TG80 will link any repeater that is activated by the user on TG80. So no it is not UK wide, it is as wide as your activations make it..

So, if you are in Glasgow, and your mate is in say London, and you both activate TG80, the two repeaters you are using will hear all traffic on TG80. Then say if a mate in Bristol activates TG80, that mates repeater will also hear TG80. At that point the group will be 3 repeaters wide only.

Very efficient if used correctly.
